Question

I want to swap my PrivatePlate to another car that we own.

How quick can this be done?

anyone done it recently?

I will go direct to our local DVLA office and take all relivent paper work.

QUESTION....
So will they give my car a new number plate over the counter?
How long does it take?
Whats the best easierst and quickest way to Put my plate on another car we have.. and get a new (may be it was the cars original number plate anyway) number plate back on mine?

advice please.

Phil

I put my personal plate on my WRX03 back in May. I had removed it from my old car about 6 months earlier. When I took the personal plate off they issued me with a new number plate over the counter, it will be one which has never been issued before, they won't reissue a plate which was on your car before. They change MOT, stamp it and issue you with a new tax disc.

When I dropped off the paperwork to put my plate on the WRX they told me it would be 48 hours at the earliest or you could have it posted, don't do that, collect it !

You are then supposed to fit new plates before using the car again. I got mine from fancyplates.com and they arrived within a couple of days.

The original personal plates off my old car I fitted to new car without any hassle. The DVLA will answer any questions you have.

Don't forget to inform your insurance company immediately too or you won't be insured.

Andy.

Just trying to sort my partners reg out at present. I sent all appropriate documentation to them, I received them back 7 days later stamped accordingley. 14 days after the intial posting i'm still awaiting the new VRD. So not too bad at present.
As you are willing to goto the office in person, this I would think speeds up the process.

If you take all the correct paper work with you (including both tax discs and transfer fees) they should do it straight away.(while you wait)

The vehicle with the private plate on it at the moment will most probably get the plate back that was on it before.(if there was one)

When I've changed my plates back in the past, the cars have reverted to the original numbers - handy if you kept the original plates.

Cheers,

Ian.

I rang DVLA.. explained what i wanted to do... he said it takes4 weeks to get it sorted! and advised not to sell the ca till i get all the Docs back!?????

Before.. i go to a dealer see the car i want.. say i'll collect the car the folling week.
in that time they transfer my plate over.. and i drive off in my new car with my FIL 973 on the reg?
1 week turn round!
They just go to the local office and sort it out there nad then.. so where does the 4 weeks come into it.
they said for a retainer its a 6 week process.

The plate transfer can be done the same day.. U get you cherished number on your NEW car. You get the old plates back on your OLD car.. Both the tax discs also get changed.. No probs you can drive the new car with your cherished plate..

But the delay is in the V5 docs coming back for your OLD car.. They will come to you and be in your name.. So basically until you receive the replacement V5 then your old car can't really be sold..
However we had to give a car back to a dealer cos it was a dog.. They did the transfer for us and they had to wait until we got the V5 back, we passed it to the dealer. They could then sell the car..

I did one at the Nottingham office recently ( Chalfont Drive ) , it is all done on the spot ( tax mot etc) and you can use it immediately , I had the plates made up at Halfords ( while you wait ) before getting the paperwork done , they just need the "certificate of entitlement "

Its a form that I got when I bought the plate , it came from the dvla

if the plate is already assigned to a car ( with log book ) then all you need is the log book

As said above you can do it all the same day, if you've got all the paper work, BUT you do have to wait for the log book(s) to come through.
The only time this can be a problem is if you are trying to sell one of the cars, however any trader or garage won't be bothered as they know log book doesn't give any title to the car, but private buyers may feel uneasy.

Thing are very quick (or were last few weeks)

I took my plate off my old car and the V5 was back within 10 Days!!

I also picked up my new car on the 29th NOV (plate swaped at Notts on 28th) and all the docs were back on monday 15th Dec.

If you go to the VRO in Notts you will be given your new reg no. for the car while you wait 9 times out of 10, worse case will be the following day! you should also get back the old number the car had before you put on your private plate.

regards

Jon

Rasher, that's even easier(and cheaper), you take your certificate of entitlement, and all your documents to the license center, and they'll sort you out, again a new log book will follow in the post.
