Exclamation

Got sent a link to this today, answers some of the questions that I've read in previous Optimax vs Ultimate posts.

BP Ultimate

I got some inside information that it is a MINIMUM of 97 ron, normally akin to that of Optimax.

I think I'll still be buying Optimax though... and I work for BP!

I was going to do this... but I couldn't be bothered before, now you've motivated me! lol

BP Ultimate unleaded compared to ordinary unleaded acceleration test images

They shouldn't be running an STI8 on ordinary unleaded anyway!

I work for a stupid company...

Optimax is 98 RON - It's Optimax everytime for me, even though I have to drive miles to the nearest Shell garage!....

Had a MY03 WRX for about a month. It was run purely on Optimax until I got lost in Wales on Monday, where I had to fill up with Ultimate. The car was jumping and hesitating all over the place... couldn't wait to get Optimax back in, and it is fine again!

Maybe my car is just too used to Optimax!! (I can't drink Fosters after Stella!!).

Its interesting that they quote it as being 97ron I thought superunleaded was 97ron anyway.

On the Australian site (I looked a few weeks ago cause the uk site wasnt finished, and we just got it at a new bp station locally) its listed as 98ron

The Minimum guaranteed figure is usually the one you should rely on. This "but it's more actually" type insinuation stuff is IMHO, a load of dangly bits If it was more, they would say so (like Shell do with Optimax! ). IIRC from all the threads discussing it when it was released (and many including I conversed with BP also), Ultimate is 97 RON (Optimax is 98) and has the same MON/Calorific content as Optimax (so therefore I don't see a reason to use it). Some people with Knocklinks have reported that their car is lighting up like a Christmas tree on Ultimate but is fine on Optimax. BP seem keen on answering any queries along the line of "why isn't Ultimate as good as Optimax" with responses like "this fuel is aimed at all users, not just the performance car sector and BTW did you realise that Ultimate also now includes a performance diesel fuel as well". That tells me all *I* need to know.....

Thumbs down

I think I was one of the first few to report back. I noticed the difference straight away on the Knocklink. I get the occasional red when really pushing the car, but with Ultimate it was almost every gear change when driving the car hard. It was enough for me to say goodbye to it.

It's not the lottery; if BP tell with it's a minimum of 97 RON, then that's what I expect to get. If it was really 98 RON, it would be marketed as such.

It's also 2p per litre more expensive than my local Shell garage, so sticking with Optimax is a no brainer for me. Optimax may not be the most spectacular fuel, but it's the best of a bad bunch and we don't have many options now do we .....

Unleaded
Super Unleaded
Ultimate
Optimax
any of the above + Octane Booster
