Ah, but then its not a "out of the box import" and you will be running the same map as me, so won't be any quicker
S.B types quicker than me.

Hi all,
Just this min joined, (but already a member of IWOC)
Just want some advise on wether to buy a UK impreza turbo or an Import Impreza WRX. Ive got £7000 to spend, insurance isnt too bad, uk is £760 comp and import £970.
If i had to choose one car, ie a uk sitting next to an import and i had both keys, i would choose the import cos of the extras and more power, but you dont get a service history and you dont know whats been done to it etc, some imports done even get undersealed, which makes me want a uk car.
But a uk car hasnt got a nice interior and less power, but has the service history!!!!
This is doing my head in!
does the import drink more than the uk model??? can anyone think of what i should go for.
you can see my conserns, i just want one of these beasts!!!
Thanks
G

I would go for the UK car, for the price your paying, the performance difference would be minimal, ie 220ish bhp v 208bhp, even more than 208bhp if you run a uk car on sul.
Tunability would also favour the uk car, having an ecu mapped for 95 ron fuel and better knock adjustment means its also not going to be sitting in your mind weather the engine is up to it.

I've owned a uk car MY2000 for the last 10 months. It was a lovely car, quite quick, but not as fast as you'd expect and you can be troubled by GTI drivers.
My cousin owns a jap import WRX STI V and the difference between my old UK car and his was chalk and cheese, his is so much more powerful it's untrue. So I've just bought an STI VI ,picking her up next week.
Think it through carefully, the imports may drink an extra mpg or two especially a hard driven STI. Insurance is more on the Imports and it's foolish not to run an import on 97 or 98 Ron fuel - you must run STIs on a minimum of 97 Ron fuel or you can get detonation problems which can lead to piston meltdown.
The UK car is a lovely car and more thsan quick enough for most situations. But like me, if you ever get a ride in an STI, the 215 BHP uk car feels limp from then on.
You might want to look at UK cars that have the prodrive performance package (ppp) Which are around 245 BHP and have performance a bit closer to the jap imports.
Read up on the forum here, do searches etc and then go buy an excellent scooby. Nows the time to buy with car prices falling,
Good luck Cal

And then while your caning your "out of the box" import trying to keep up with our "modded uk's" your engine goes bang co's you've not had it re-mapped and have a tank full of unleaded

I note currymonster said he's been troubled by Gti's in his MY2000. Was this in a traffic jam?
My MY98 UK Turbo (wagon I might add) is running around 240 Bhp, with just correct fuel, proper plugs, pampered with oil like a baby...oh, and a handmade Sti exhaust with decat The only cars that have troubled me have been a 911 Turbo running +400BHP (pi$$ed on me is more like it), and a 280 Bhp 200SX, which couldn't get near me from a standing start, but slowly crept up when moving.
I wouldn't worry about the power of a UK Turbo - driven right, looked after properly, and a couple of mods will see you doing 1/4's in 13-14 seconds (or even less).
The extra insurance, and the unknown history for me was the clincher for buying a UK. Many imports, I believe, are crash-damaged, repaired, and some importers don't tell you this. Though there's no doubt a good few decent ones, I think it's just harder to find them and to be sure of what they are.

I am a complete newbie to Scoobs but here's my 2p worth:
If you're even asking this question it would suggest that you don't know loads about imports. If you do go for one, get someone to thoroughly check it over. Better still, have a look at loads and try and find someone that can read japanese...go with your gut instinct...wish I had (it could have saved me £8k...)

If you do go for one [an import], get someone to thoroughly check it over
For all the effort that you can put into buying a car, you may still find something unpredictable goes wrong after buying it.
If kept fairly standard, Scoobys tend to be reliable. So if you're willing to take the (small) risk of buying an import then go for it - you will end up with a better spec car. Cars are serviced in Japan - just that often the paperwork doesn't follow the car to the UK.

i bought an RA import and have had no problems at all, all swings and round abouts. There is no problem with finding grey import spares and insurance companies.
So down to personal choice...like the colour/wheels/mods applied after purchase...:-)
As for the engine going bang on unleaded(95RON)well serves them right for not doing basic home work and shame on the retailer/private seller for not advising 98RON + octane booster if its an import and your heavy footing it.
