The ultimate oil additive or just hot air????
#1
Got home from work early today and found myself watching one of those shoping channels on sky.(boredom)!
This didnt seem to be your ordinary sh!te though!
They were banging on about a new oil additive developed in the states and running various engines for hours with no oil in the sump, you could actualy see one of them running on a test bed, flat out with the sump removed, then the bloke cut a water hose (still running) and chucked a load of sand over the valve gear as the cam covers were also removed!
Then some bird was driving a car around for a claimed 4 hours with no oil filter or sump plug on the engine.
Ive heard it all before but i wondered what people on here thought about this stuff and if anyone has seen it to?
Surely if it was this good you would see it everywhere?

I'm not very technical on these things but oil is there to cool as well as lubricate. As I recall there were some products that made similar claims and which did actually decrease friction but which also caused all the little channels for oil in the head to become blocked up. In the end it all ended in tears.
I suspect that there is, or was, a web side dedicated to debunking the claims made for "Slick 50" (hope that's the right name) and, as you point out, if this stuff is so good then why don't manufacturers specify it?

Look on the bright side. At least you could peel the label off the bottle and use it to wipe your bum.
An additive that protects your engine against sand ingress. Clever stuff indeed!

****, you're right. I'm going to buy a bottle now and put it in my boot, next to the bottle of spare coolant, radiator epoxy, litre of oil, puncture mousse and spare wing mirror.
Then again, I might just buy a gun and shoot the thieving little runt before he gets his paws under my bonnet...

The kid would have to be quite agile to get the cam covers off a Scoob!! It took me long enough on Saturday...
On a more serious note, I've developed this fuel additive that will allow you to run the car even after the petrol's run out...
Anyone want any?
Some cars will run longer than others with no oil - my Mother-in-law's Rover and my godmother's Montego ran for months with only teaspoon of oil in each... No additives either.

My wife (independent type) ran an L reg Escort for 4 years and when I traded it in for the Picasso I asked her for the service book / reciepts she said "what service"....???, 4 years running a car only sticking petrol in when the light came on

The "no oil" tests look impressive but pretty much any old engine (and you notice they don't use a Scooby flat 4 in the demos ) will run without oil for at least a few minutes (at tickover) without outward signs of distress, even though the internal wear may be high.
The problem with PTFE-based additives is that the PTFE particles swell to many times their original size when hot. This can block oil filters and reduce flow across the filter ... and is why most people criticise Slick 50 etc etc.
Have to say that I used to use Molyslip in my BGT and I always thought it went better with it, but I just stick to recommended synth oils now for car & bike ...

in my early motoring days my mini used to P oil out.. so I put some slik 50 in as well as kept topping up the oil.. On arriving at work one day I went to where I normally parked the car to see a HUGE puddle of oil... Hmm checked the mini.. no oil on the dipstick.. It did look like I driven home and back again with an empty sump.. about 20 miles including about 10 on the motorway.. Topped the oil up and sorted the leak, not lasting problems although I did sell it shortly after.. Would I put it in a modern engine? No.. don't know why, I just believe the tolerances on a old bmc designed engine were greater than today's modern machinery..

I believed the hype and put Slick 50 in my last few cars (pre scooby!) including a sunny GTIR with no untoward bad effects. I suppose if your using the right grade of oil and check its height regularly then your fine and shouldn't need any additives. Saying which if anyone finds one that will increase a scoobs MPG to 30 plus I'll be there like a ferret up a drainpipe!!
