PPP on WRX '03

If you're wavering over PPP go try one. Noise on motorway is hardly noticable - prob because 3000rev* = 100mph.
*edited to say: idiot - meant 4000rev!!
And if it helps allay another fear - my wife still hasn't noticed the change (done at 1000K svc)!!
Two friend with XK8 and M3 heard me start up the other night and remarked "that sounds great". 3 months later I still drop window and 2 gears on way home from train station where road does s-bend through a deep cutting - at 5000rpm it's gorgeous!

These are the bits that were replaced by the kit on my 03 Wagon.
All except for the nice ICE install (Big black radio lump)as that was more than a double Din.

OK OK
depends on how on defines "really"
sure - the sound's great at 2500 (throaty, purposeful burble hinting at power to come)
even better at 3000+
but really spine-tingling/grin making at 4000+
will conduct utterly unbiased test on way home tonight just to be sure
ps how DO you do that underlined "quote" thingy?!

Just had a PPP (Prodrive performance pack) fitted on my WRX '03, thought it might be useful to give feedback for WRX Scooby owners thinking about getting this option.
The only reason I went for this over any other tuning option was that it fully preserves the std manufacturers' warranty. With a brand new car I felt it very unwise to do anything but this.
I' d driven the car for 2,200 miles before the mod and was pleased with the general performance of the car, but felt it was too quiet and also I ideally wanted better acceleration performance, in that 30mph to 70ish zone.
I had the PPP fitted by a local Subaru dealer at a total cost of £1,600. They fitted it in half a day.
The PPP kit consists of a new stainless steel backbox, a new downpipe, a new ECU and a new intercooler pipe section. You also get a 'fitment certificate' to help when selling on.
On collecting the modded car and starting it up I was very, very pleased with the the sound produced by the Prodrive exhaust. It really gave the deep flat-four burble sound I'd wanted, not too loud but just right.
On driving it away, through a residential area, keeping below 3,000rpm , apart from the sound (which was great) there was very little noticable difference.
After reaching a nice B-class road I know fairly well and opening it up, it became very obvious there was a BIG difference now with the car. Before the mod the car would pull well in the 3K - 6K rpm range, with smooth power delivery. But now, with PPP, in this rpm range the car really pulls a lot harder. It's hard to describe in words, but that 'pushed back in the seat' feeling happens all the time when changing up through the box, with absolutely no let up.
The only critism I'd have, is that fitting PPP makes the next corner arrive a lot quicker than you expect and you do start thinking are the standard brakes really up to it?
Published 'official' specs are;
Std WRX '03 '03 WRX with PPP
Power (Max Bhp) 221Bhp 261Bhp
Torque(lb/ft @3500rpm) 221 257
0 - 60 mph (secs) 5.5 4.7
Std Qtr (secs) 14.3 13.7
BTW - The sound when you are around 5K - 6K rpm sounds great!
In short I'd recommend anyone with a '03 WRX to get a PPP upgrade!
Cheers,
Chris.

Nope, i can confirm it is the downpipe.
I put the car up on a ramp after the fitting and did expect to see a new back box and a new mid section. However the mid section is still the old one and the new components are the stainless stell back box and the downpipe (the pipe in front of the mid sction).
Thanx,
Chris.

Sorry, to just to be a bit more precise.
Starting from the back of the car;
The back box has been changed for a new stainless steel one.
The next, second section (with cat box?) is the same as before.
The next, third section after that (the one with a pipe going off at 90 degrees) has been changed for a new one.
The next, forth section, seems to be the same.
Cheers,
chris.

Agree with you Pockman, the PPP does transform the standard car into what alot of people consider to be a "proper" WRX with the performance and soundtrack to match the cars reputation.
The grin I felt when I first started the car up outside the dealers after the PPP was fitted was unbelievable, really superb and as Evo magazine said, the power to pound (£) ratio is pretty good (40 horses for £1600 isnt bad).
There are plenty of demo WRX cars out there that have been PPP'd, if youre unsure then give one of them a drive. I find it hard to believe how anyone could be disappointed.

This may be a load of crap, but this is what I was told.
Second section is just a resonator box, no cat.
Third section is the new catless mid-pipe.
Fourth section is the original downpipe.

Pockman, I think you now have a decat midsection with the resonator section left in. The downpipe is further forward than you think (i.e. coming down from the engine compartment). Those who are less worried about the warranty can have the downpipe decatted/sports catted as well, and then remap, as an alternative to the PPP. This gives more power and a quicker spool up (typically around 285 bhp vs the 261 of the PPP).
Best wishes,
Grant.

Chris, agree with all your comments, my next upgrade will be the brakes, probably not Subaru items either as they are so expensive.
Just upgraded my headunit to an Alpine one, another worthwhile upgrade from the standard 7W per channel!
Enjoy the car and maybe we'll meet again at the Scooby Shootout 2004?

WRX PPP,re-map of ECU,b/box,de-catted midsection(centre is just a resonator),intercooler pipe.
STI PPP,re-map of ECU,b/box,de-catted midsection, new d/pipe with hiflow sports cat, uprated fuel pump,no intercooler pipes as the STI is already uprated.
Thats why there is £500 difference.

Silverback - think it was approx 3000 but will check next time.
My point was more that PPP noise doesn't really come on song until 4000+ so fine on M-way. Agree re 2700 for better fuel economy.
PPP doesn't seem to have made much difference to mpg - though other threads have claimed a +ve benefit if driven carefully(sic). Unfortunatley I don't do enough long distance to do regular checks - and in truth have given up as 20-25mpg is too depressing if considered with any modicum of sense.
But if you care about mpg, why on earth fit PPP - or for that matter a boggo WRX?!

Kent...
Purely technical answer, I don't worry about fuel consumption to that degree when driving, just repeating what I've read on previous posts.
As for PPP'd WRX - I love it!
Only problem is that you do get used to the extra power very quickly and start wanting more (STi PPP?)

Brilliant - get my WRX 03 with PPP fitted from new this weekend - yeee haaa, or at least ye ha until she's run in! It's like waiting for Christmas morning when I was a kid (wife says I still am - mid life crisis and all)
Test drove the STi PPP so hope mine won't be too disapointing in comparison - stil 0-60 on 4.7s (think that's right) seems pretty bloody quick to me - how much firking BHP do you STi boys need!!
