Had my 97 turbo for around 6 months now.......bought it with 68K on the clock. Got a letter from the delaer advising me it was due a 6mth interval service, have just about 74K on the clock now.
How much is this going to be you reckon.....
Should I run and hide from the wife?????

if it's only a small service it shouldnt be more than £150 at the most. If your wife thinks that's excessive then you will need a very good hiding place in 6 months time!

I'll probably get shot for this, but why would you want to pay £150 for basically an oil change?

IMHO dealer servicing on older cars (more than 5 years, or once the car is out of warranty) isn't the best use of money, as you'll never get it back when you sell, and the "loss" you'll make by selling a specialist serviced car compared to a dealer serviced car isn't that great. It does, however make the car a little more difficult to sell.

Of course it depends on your ownership term... I'm not planning to sell my Scoob for a fair while, so I've gone to the extreme and I'm servicing it myself (including cambelt) and I have used this fact in the past to plot and scheme mods past the wife (Don't tell her though!!! )

The other plus point of doing stuff like oil changes yourself is that you can be certain they're done properly, rather than having to rely on the garage greasemonkey (no insult intended to myself) going about it the right way. If you're going to change the oil at 3-4000 mile intervals, you need to do some of them yourself anyway.

If you service the car yourself, keep all the receipts and record what you do. IMHO, that sort of thing can be of equal (sometimes greater) value to an experienced potential buyer as a FDSH.

BTW, Dave, you've been rumbled mate. I am your wife!

Thanks for the advice guys.....just for your info...i have to get it done at the dealer...we got a years warranty with the car..so i dont want to invalidate that...once its out of warranty i probably have a crack at it myself or take it to a local garage instead....ah well i suppose i better go do the dishes, do the hoovering, do the cleaning, walk the dog, change the baby etc etc....
cheers

Yep, if you've got warranty agreement with them, let them sort it. In advance though, it's worth asking them what oil they use, and how they change it. If the service manager tells you they use Magnatec and gives you a funny look when you ask him the second question, you should be slightly concerned.

Yes, best keep the warranty intact, then have a go at servicing afterwards. It's not that difficult, despite what you may be told.
