Hi guys,

I currently have a '02 CTR and have been happy with it since day one. But im after a bit more pace (and alot less wheelspin) and i've noticed the price of Subaru P1s have gone down quite a bit since i've last looked at them. I have always loved the look of this car and im sure its got the go to back up the looks but what are the running costs of a car like this? Would it eat tyres and petrol alot more than my current car?

I drive moderately quick most of the time so petrol and tyres are not cheap atm but i can afford it, would the scooby rinse my wallet?

Just asking cos im really interested in a P1 and i might be looking to change quite soon so im interested to hear your views.

Any help would be appreciated,

Petrol, you will use optimax, not normal 95 ron unleaded. Tyres, id say not that expensive, depends where u get. Insurance will be more as will big services. I dont know how this compares with your car, what mileage you do or how much money you have to spend.

I do around 17k a year and my budget allows for an early P1 with 30-40k on the clock?

My budget would probably be on the lesser side of 20k so i'd probably be looking for an early P1 with a few miles on. I currently pay around 1k insurance with 5 years NCB. Thats under my mothers name though.

insurance wise im paying £900 full no claims and no endorsements and im 30. I guess your insurance would be a bit high.

There are a few p1s for sale for less than 20 k, my mate has just bought one. Service wise youre looking at on average between 2-3 services a year with that mileage. Expect to pay around £500 for one of the bigger services and £150-£200 for interim.

Do a search on www.autotrader.co.uk and youll see prob 40-50 p1s for sale

Paul,

Not had a CTR but have had an ITR and a P1.

Running costs are very similar; mpg for both was low 20`s to 30 - I thoroughly recommend both but for different reasons. I won`t bore you with `my` reasons save to say if I had to go back to only one of them it would be the Honda.

That is fraud and the insurance companies have really clamped down on this in the last few years. Don't expect them to pay out if you have a smack and they have the slightest doubt that your mother isn't the main driver.

There is a P1 for sale in the Ireland North&South section.
Y reg 2001,with only 17K miles for 18,500 sterling.
Well worth a look or trip over for that money.

i have both the CTR and a V4 type R (not P1 but close enough i guess),

CTR, cheaper to maintain service at 10-12k miles interval.
Scooby, serviced mine every 4.5k miles

CTR, front tyres wear off more compared to scooby but cheap tyres can be found if u shop around.

CTR, better for high spped cruise i think, scooby has risk of blowing the engine.

CTR doesnt get as many stares as the scooby, of course.

CTR have really low torque so with a scooby, not too many problems with overtaking.

Ultimately, they are two different cars and cannot be compared directly. if u can, go for the scooby no doubt. the burble of the flat 4 is enought o put smiles to your face every morning!

The main difference in cost will be the servicing. I think from memory the CTR is 12 months/12000 miles. The P1 is 7,500 miles or 6 months - whichever comes first. A big service is around £400-£500 depending upon dealer and small service is £100-£200. This is a lot more expensive than the CTR from what Ive seen.

Tyre wear isnt too bad but get the geometry checked straight away to avoid uneven tyre wear. It will also depend on the size wheels you have on the P1 - 18's will be a fair bit more than 17's and you need to swap all 4 in one go as Im guessing you could get away with 2 at a time on the CTR.

You should try tesco for insurance on the car i bouught my P1 4 weeks ago and still have not stopped grinning, i payed £890 to insure it I am 23 with Full NCB hopes this helps

True, but a cost comparison was requested.

Never owned a Civic but my neighbour has one. For a high speed cruise I'd take a Scooby any day. We took a group of them over to the Catalunya rally. Direct run to Lloret stopping only to refuel.

I wouldn't entertain it in his Civic - there again I am old.

Servicing is an issue but Honda parts and labour charges aren't cheap. Simple to check those anyway.

Cost of insuring his 02 TR increased by 30% this year, he now pays more than me and he is old too

Moderately fast isn't an exact term, could be bloody quick by some standards but I'd guess FWD will eat tyres by the pair.

Scoob should be kinder given average driving, but on some track days cars have destroyed a set of tyres and turned in single figure mpgs

You can't significantly influence purchase price, insurance and servicing, fuel consumption and tyre wear is a little easier to dictate

Take an extended test drive it's likey to be the deciding factor.

paul ctr few p1 for sale on forums in p1 owners club on net www.p1owc.co.uk i got one its mega four tyres about five hundred oil service 150 full service 350 34 full ncd 9000 miles per 750 quid boot it every where 20 -25 mpg full exhaust filter dumpvalve 310 bhp re mapp booked for sept power should be about 330bhp hopefully few mpg more too get one you know you want it

I know tell me about it the closest quote to that was Adrian Flux at a lovelly £2100, the only downfall with the tesco [reimium is a £700 excess and they dont go to kindly on any additional mods to the car, I live in east suffolk which has quite low car crime figures and also the car is kept in a garage.

Paul,

I have a CTR and am looking to get a scoob soon as well. One thing i'll warn you about is the insurance. My CTR insurance is not too bad, but when i was getting quotes for a P1 the cheapest i got was just over 2k.

I've driven a few CTR's, my mate has one (with NOS / Exhaust / filter) and a few dealerships have given me one for a day to take out.

The CTR is very crazy and ultimately reliable (as the Honda engines tend to be). The Scooby, slightly less so - but only because the Honda's in my opinion can't be beaten in that area.

Insurance - I insured my P1 at 24 for £1300 with Admiral at the time, my Evo costs £1650 with FNCB(9years). My Seat Cupra I insure with Tesco's for £900 with only 2Y's NCB (2nd car).

Running costs, the P1 will eat the tyres slightly slower than the CTR, but you do have to replace all 4 at once most of the time (within 1K apart anyway), so there's more cost there probably about an extra £250 PA or more for 18" wheels.

Servicing wise, yea about 140-160 for the normal services depending on where you go, but the 50(ish) one with the cambelt and brake pads etc. will be expensive - so try and get a car with a new cambelt and check the clutch and brakes as well to see what your going to have to spend out as well as the cost of the car.

Overall though - the difference in drive and the feel of speed is very different. The Civic, even when the cams change at 6.5K feels nothing like the Torgue'y feeling of the P1 and a turbo, it'll always feel better and you'll be hard pushed to get any wheel spin outa it so all that power's going down.
