My brother has this dilemma today, he has twice test driven the CTR which was about £16K new with gadgets and also a second hand Golf anniversary edition with 180BHP for £17K.
He says theres not a lot in it (on the test drives he has had so far) and he's always wanted a CTR but the VW had that solid feel to it - well it would being an old mans car !!
All he wants is to be reassured that the CTR is the way to go, and I reckon he will get the biggest smiles from the CTR, and he can haggle satnav + a/c for the same price as the VW .....
He's going in tomorrow to haggle a deal, I say CTR, what say you ?

CTR if he wants a raw fast car or if he wants something well built, solid, more comfortable and it has to be a 180bhp VAG car go for the Octavia RS its a lot better drive, faster and cheaper than the Golf.

I just got a Type-R to complement the Scooby.
I'm very happy with it.
The sound as VTEC comes in is great.
Handles nicely and is relatively economic to run (about 27mpg on average, 32-33 on a good trip).

Got to be a Leon Cupra R for that money but if he wants 3drs then I'd go for the Golf as the Anniversary handles well as they have changed the whole suspension set-up and its got 18" wheels which help the way the car handles...
There is also more tuning potential per pound with the Golf as it is Turbo'd...
Just occurred to me that this is a Scooby Site (Jap Cars), I think that I am preaching to the wrong crowd as the CTR (Jap Car) is always going to come out top here!!

If he's driven the CTR twice and is still not convinced then its either not the car for him or he didn't drive it properly
Benefits of the CTR:
Residuals
Fuel economy
Insurance
Handling
Subtlety
iVTEC
Did I mention residuals ?

Not a big surprise because i bet most of u haven't even driven a sorted Golf
I like the qoute about the annerversary have completely changed suspension.... LOL like they did something major
Change the springs and dampers for a rawer set up and remap it
then compare.....day to day driving with 220 - 240 lbs torque and 210+ bhp
And before people start saying why spend - blal blah blah
I don't think £1000 is much to get a car set up the way you want it is alot. mind you you will probably want more power after a while which unlike the TYPE R is relatively easy to achieve
The fact that the MKIV platform has so many different models with different driving experiances just goes to show how many different ways the suspension can be set up - even the Seat CUPRA R is bit soft.....

Drove a mates new 1.8 GTi Turbo yesterday. Was impressed with the quality and the way it drove. A nice everyday prospect. Anniversary really looks the part as well, far nicer than a boxy Civic. Not a hot hatch anymore though. more a grand tourer with a hatch.
Never driven a Civic, but reckon thats where the thrills and the excitement would be.
Difficult choice. I would be happy with either.

I was waiting for some Golf support! I have just gone from a MY99 to a 1.8 turbo Golf and Im really happy with it.
The big thing I would say is that going from a scoob to a golf is much much easier than going to a Honda. I am in no way nocking the Honda, as im a big fan. They drive completely different. The golf is silks smooth and pulls from low down, as does the scoob. The Honda will have pull before the VTEC but not a great deal before all hell breaks loose. You have to drive them hard to extract the power. The Golf has great tuning potential (TT 225 BHP lump) and with some springs, iw will be great. Right now, I don't feel safe putting it into a bend
It depends which of these you want. If you're after a racer, its the Honda. If you want some comfort mixed with smooth power and good fuel consumption, go Golf. (I get 34mpg!) I really always wanted a Honda and nearly went Integra, but someone I knew wanted a swap with the Golf. The Honda's a litle more agressive!
I am impartial too!

Honda every time.
As standard it will be faster and a better drive.
Oh, and the biggest difference will be reliability.
The Golf may feel better built, but the honda will have better build integrity, of that there can be no doubt ..
Drive a golf hard and it will, surprisingly, start falling to bits around you. Even VW service technicians will admit stuff like the Brakes are not up to the job (it will eat pads and disks) and on the 3dr golf the doors are simply too heavy for the a pillar.
Thats one of the reasons the honda's residuals are better.
VW "quality" is more percieved and only skin deep.

Its all very well changing the springs and remapping the Golf to get it "sorted" but I suspect my brother wants fun from it out of the box - no messing.
Anyway he's mailed me to say he's off to the Honda garage now, so watch this space. The performance figures from the VW are a good few seconds slower from the CTR which is a fairly good indication which would be more fun !

Being serious, I cant comment, cause I havent driven the Golf or any Golf for that matter. After being proved wrong about my misconceptions of a certain car(the CTR), wouldnt want to comment without driving the golf extensively.
But the CTR is a lot of fun

Currently driving a CTR, and even getting 34mpg on more restrained days
I did look at the Golf, which was similar in price and better equipped. But to be honest I really couldn't get excited about them at all, which is important to me when I'm parting with my hard earned cash. Just my personal opinion, no offence to Golf owners intended but it was in danger of sending me to sleep...

Sounds like Dark Blue Mark has his head screwed on.
Two totally different cars IMO. The CTR is more raw and agressive and the Golf is much more refined and smooth. Horses for courses.
For once a civilised discussion, I'm impressed No comments like "Golfs are for p00fs"

Cheers Dunk, always try to be objective
The anniversary edition has 180bhp as standard, and is pretty fast. Probably wouln't need to chip it.
Another BIG plus for me is that people dont bat an eyelid at my golf. My scoob had been spat on, involved in numerous road rage incidents from jealous *****, tyre caps stolen, etc etc.
Diablo, to say it will fall apart around you is rubbish. Its like saying all French people are nice Im assuming you have owned one. What problems did you have? I have to say that the scoob interior is very flimsy, so I was impressed with the Golf.

Hmmm,
Mine seems ok though, and my family have all had VW's including mk3 and 4 golfs with no problems at all. Must have been one of the Spanish built ones, as I've heard stories about that.
My mate had an RB5 with similar problems, so guess one offs happen! Have to agree that he Honda is pretty bullet proof all round.
Still, to answer the guy's question, sounds like he wants a bit of a racer, which the golf doesn't pretent to be. Honda won't dissapoint, im sure.
