Okay, so yesterday my '95 WRX Wagon developed a grinding noise when you brake from the front right of the car. Doesn't always do it, seems worse when it's cold.
Today, I'm out and about, and the speedo stops working. Bugger, well it's not the end of the world me thinks, so I drive back. On the way back the CEL comes on. Goes out when I slow down/stop, but comes back after a while at a reasonable speed (50-60 I'd guess, but as I've said speedo has stopped working). I've checked the ECU error code, and it comes up as 24 - Idle Air Control Solenoid - hmm the car idles beautifully.....
Any ideas guys? Failing that, any recommendations on where to take the car in the Herts/Beds/Bucks area?
Thanks for your help...
Rich

Hi Rich we had the very same problem with our STI2 after putting on a set of tarrox 40 groove, the problem only occured about a week after fitting them and only first thing or when pulling off after being parked for an hour or two.
I stripped it down but cloudn't see anything!! I moved the heatsheild back a tad with a screwdriver built it back up and it never made the noise again......Very strange i didn't think it was the heatsheild but hey give it a go mate take your wheeloff and get your torch out! it could all ways be a trapped stone or a bearing on it's way. !As for your other probs sorry cant be any help.![](http://burns.thefinaldimension.org/cwm/cwm/uhoh.gif)

Thanks for the advice Adam, I did jack the car up when I got home to have a look, but I didn't go as far as pulling the wheel off - I'll check it out.

Is the speedo working yet?
I believe if the speedo fails or is disconnected the ECU shows a Check Engine Light... guess the ECU uses the speedo sensor for some map or other...
My guess is if you get the speedo working again the CEL will go away.
Dunno why it stopped tho.

When I fitted my new disks the other day i got a grinding noise the day after it turned out to be the retainer spring for the 2 pins on the caliper rubbing against the wheel.
Do you have subaru 4 pots on your wagon cos this may be the cause????
Only a guess mind you.

I was hoping that the CEL was due to the faulty speedo, that's why I was confused when the ECU reported code 24...no, it's not working yet - it appears to be connected fine at the gearbox end, how do I get behind the dash?

I had a grinding noise on the passenger-side front wheel of my 97 Impreza, which steadily got worse from a squeak to a horrible grind.
Took it to the dealers and they found that the brake caliper had got stuck, and was wearing the pad unevenly, and the noise was coming from the metal warning "tags" on the pad.
Had to have new pads, and they freed the caliper and re-greased it. Seemed okay for a month after... until it would appear that the new pads are loose! They rattle now! D'oh!

Just a quick update: Checked the error codes today and it's now developed 33 (Vehicle Speed Sensor 2) which is what I'd expect.
After some intensive searching on Scoobynet I've found that the ECU will report code 24, if there's a fault with the speedo, so it looks like if I can cure that, the rest will go away![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Anyone know if the car is safe to drive in this condition (apart from the risk of no speedo obviously) as I still need to get to/from work?

Update: Well I've figured out what the grinding noise is - it is indeed the caliper fouling the wheel - I've just checked it out and there's no clearance whatsoever between the caliper and the wheel, compared to lots of clearance on the other side. Definatly shouldn't be driving it then....
