I've finally sold my merc and will be the proud owner of a 2001 wrx by this coming weekend..

It was a hard decision wether or not to buy one after all the posts/stories i've read on these forums and elsewhere about thefts , car jacking etc..

another story i've found this morning http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2299993.stm

still makes me think wether its a good idea or not to get my new motor

the car i'm getting has a cat 1 and tracker but as i'm new to this sort of car is there anything else that i should seriously look at buying as extra security? I know theres lots of threads about this subject but they all eventually turn it to joke about carrying guns/ baseball bats etc..

So.... what Is the best legal way to protect my car and its occupants?

Thumbs up

Clifford concept 600 has anti hijack features. Locks all doors after reaching 2500rpm for the first time, dual zone proximaty alarm, Black jack if wanted too (but this is not thatchams approved if activated).

Costs about £600

Usual common sense stuff.
Keep doors locked when driving.
Always leave plenty of room in front of you at lights, etc.
As you approach home be wary of being followed - once around the block if suspicious.
Steering wheel disklock for when car unattended.
Removable stereo fascia.
Leave nothing on display in car when parked.

Oh, and don't forget to stop worrying long enough to enjoy the car.

If it's any consolation, these events are few and far between.

This type of thing doesn't just affect Subaru owners, but Evo, GTR, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Merc, in fact all of the desirable marques! Even Ford

If you let these issues govern your buying a car, you'd buy a Corsa Merit Even then, some little barstool would try to joyride it!

My advice is, get the car you want. IF you're unlucky enough to get grief, give em the car. That's what you pay (a LOT of) insurance for.

I lived in the area where the Dudley incident happened, when I had my MY95 Scoob. When I got onto the drive, it went straight into the garage. Even when it was being washed - out the garage, wash, into the garage.

My next door neighbours both had WRXs - NEVER a problem. It was only when the one went over to a BMW 325, that he had 2 black guys, in broad daylight, pull his wife out of the car on their drive

(Sad) moral of this story is that "if they want it, they'll take it"

In the meantime, enjoy!!!

Cool

yeh' s'pose your right.. I was warned of the possibility of getting dragged out of the merc when i first bought it.. but luckily had no problems apart from being followed once. I'm still looking forward to getting the Impreza this weekend but will probly be a bit more carefull than i was with the merc.

thx for the advice.. hopefully will be making many happy posts here after its delivered

A certain amount of paranoia is healthy, just dont let it take control of your life, and as the others have said, dont forget to enjoy driving your new toy

The standard security can be set set auto-lock the doors on turning the ignition. Have a read through the instruction book to find out how

Madgrip,

Don't let thieving scum dictate what car you drive. As soon as you start driving the scoob you'll know you made the right decision.

Craig.

Its really sad to see these stories and hear about peoples fears for buying something they will take a lot of pride and joy in owning. Coming from Mansfield, Notts, where car crime is believed to be the national pass time, ive had my fair share of run ins and attempted thefts.
I live in complete contrast since i moved to Michigan. I often leave the keys in the ignition all night, i dont have to worry about locking the house when i leave.
My last concern is for my Mum. She works at a Co-op and gets loads of shoplifters in all the time. Shes been beaten up once and threatened countless times, once with guns. Not something you want your 53yr old mum to be tackling.

Id still get the car though mate, just be observant but dont let it interfere with your fun. And after all, maybe your kids would like a new German Sheppard to play with??
