I think my speedo is lying, honest officer...

....I have a jap import which has just had a dial conversion to be converted to MPH on the speedo, but the odometer + trip meter still read KPH. What would be the best way to get it reading in MPH on the odometer? Would i have to replace the dash?
Also... the speedo is wildly out, i.e, 25mph = 30 mph 34 = 40mph, and 41 = 50 mph, so i am speeding without realising! How could i correct this? I presume the error is from the dial conversion!

all you would need to do was remove the dials & replace them a suitable amount more clockwise on than they came off & jobs a good un i guess. It's not as easy as it sounds thou presuming that is basically how it needs doing as removing needles can easily break the spindle on the gauge thus i'd recommend taking it back to wherwe you got it done since it's their fault & they can take any risks & dont even think of using speedo underreading as an exucse if you were caught speeding as that in itself is illegal so no defense at all

Is it not the garages fault then for selling me a car which is not road legal? I mean, come on, how many of you have bought a car from a second hand car garage and thought, "oh i must check the speedo calibaration to see if it is reading correctly!" ???!!
Incidentally the garage doesn't want to know bout it as it "not there problem"

if its been sva,d then it will have been within limits and over reading is normal ie if at 65 mph it reads 70 mph but if it read 65 mph and you are doing 70 then you have no defence if cought speeding. if you want to convert it to read in mph and miles and derestict mail me and ill supply you with a convertor and how to do it ....chris

Well, you're in charge of the vehicle so the buck stops with you.
Like it is your responsibility to make sure the vehicle is in 100% roadworthy condition & insured & mot'd & taxed before you drive it.
If you've recently purchased the vehicle & the speedo is faulty, then take it back & have them rectify it as they have a duty to supply a vehicle that is 100% legal as well. But that won't stop you getting nicked for it...

Truerim,
Going from 205/55/15 to 215/40/17 is fine. By my calculations your speedo would then be over-reading by about 0.45 percent.
Dazza01,
Going from 195/50/15's to 205/40/17's is not so good as your speedo is now under-reading by 3.44 percent.

Got it sorted, local garage is fitting a new clock anyway to convert it from km to miles and at the same time recalibarating it to what it should say! i.e when i'm doin 60 the clock is showing 60 not 50! Thought it looked slow when driving compared to other scoobys, not seeing the needle go round as fast! :~

Dazza,
When you're doing an indicated 30mph you will really be doing 31mph. An indicated 70mph will correspond to a real speed of 72.5mph. Not really a big enough error to worry about...
