Phone the insurance (there may be a different number for windscreens). It's usually covered for a £50 excess. Make sure you give the windscreen company the model, type and chassis code so they get the right one in.

I claim the personal record for breaking a windscreen - 48 hours after I picked the car up

Took Autoglass 7 days and a lot of searching to find one for an STI7.

Stopped driving round the gravel pits now

Thumbs down

I recently called my insurance company about getting my windscreen replaced as it has a crack in it. I've been told that I have to use one of their glass centres and as the car is more than 3 years old, (it's an RB5), they won't use a genuine Scoob screen. If I want to take it elsewhere to get it done, they'll pay up to £100 less the £50 excess...

To say I am not exactly impressed is something of an understatement.

When mine cracked after a couple of weeks of ownership it took 7 weeks to get a replacement, mainly because all the STi8 screens were on a ship and there were none in the UK.
The STi8 screen differs from a 'standard windscreen' as it has a cut out roughly a few inches inboard of where your tax disc is to allow you to see the chassis number.....oh and it is c£300 more expensive!!!!

3 weeks and still waiting for a genuine screen for my MY02 WRX.

Perhaps Subaru are keeping them all for Tommi Makinen?

Question

Why wait for a genuine screen? My mate's a windscreen fitter, and he says the genuine article are NOT always even as good as aftermarket ones, just dearer.

And on the other hand, sometimes you get one that is made by the same company that makes them for the manufacturer any IIRC.

My sisters TT screen had to be replaced (insurance job, £50 etc...)

They put in a Pilkington one and she took it to the dealer for them to check it out and they said it was fine....

When I had a VW they replaced it with a genuine VW screen - but they removed the VW sign - you could see where it had been removed, plus this was the second time they did it (first one was faulty - sun strip/tint was wrong) and on the first one they had forgotten to remove the VW logo.

Something about they can't sell it as a genuine VW item (even though it is) so they remove the logo/branding.

Londonpaul, I believe that you should take it back to the supplying dealer and get them to fix it under warranty. There is a huge amount of correspondence about this on the American website, Clubwrx.net, where the thought is that the windscreens are faulty. I also have a cracked screen on my MY03 (two weeks ownership!)and the only reason I haven't gone to a dealer is that it was an import, though I do have a pan European warranty which should apply. I suggest that you look closely at the crack and see if there was any impact damage, I suspect not, thus implying a faulty screen.

I had to replace a screen on a 94 car and haggled the fitter down to the £100 plus £50 excess - the price you pay for an insurance job is grossly inflated

I cracked my STi7 screen at Knockhill (stone from a Westfield that had been grasstracking)

It Autoglass replaced it at two days notice, no problem, £50 excess, job done.
