Greetings from the Gulf
#1
A while ago I posted that I was being mobilised and getting sent to the Gulf with the Army. Sorry I haven't got time to dig up the link...
Well, after 10 weeks of being mobilised and 8.5 weeks in the Gulf, I've finally got internet access. I may not get a chance to reply again until I get back to the UK in about 3 weeks time.
How was my war then?
Pretty crap really. I've spent most of my time in Iraq and, although I've been close to Basra most of that time, have only seen any action from a long distance. I've not even seen an Iraqi soldier. The war bit was a bit tense at times with lots of Scud alerts and an entire day spent in full NBC suit and respirator.
The poverty in Iraq alone convinced me this war was worthwhile. Any doubts I had before coming have been well and truely quashed seeing the squalor that some have to live in while Saddam was living it up in his numerous palaces.
I'm currently serving with 28 Engineer Regiment and I'll have a few things to say about this regiment when I'm a civilian again. Suffice to say I've not enjoyed my time with them, and neither have any of the other "augmentees" as us reservists are called. Quite a few regulars are less than thrilled as well.
I am due to fly back to the UK for demobilisation between the 4th to 13th June and I am counting the days.
Anyway, good to see SN is still going strong and I look forward to joining the fray a bit more frequently soon.
All the best,
Jerome.

Nice to hear from you Jerome, I was thinking the other day that it was time we heard from you. Glad all is well and that you will be back soon, but sorry that your stay was not as happy as it could have been.
You will be back with your family soon though and you can start looking for another Scoob too, can't be bad.

Hi Jerome,
Glad to hear you're safe and well and I remember the discussions before you flew out.
I've heard the old STAB comments before, but this was always mentioned with the TA and not other reservist forces (well the RMR to be exact). All the lads I know who got called up loved every minute of it, but probably 90% of RMR is ex-regulars so they always mix well. This was one of the main reasons I joined the RMR and not other reserve forces.
Have a safe flight home,
Stefan
