I take delivery of a new MYo3 STI PPP on Sunday. Does it need to be run in.
We run several diesel cars/4x4/vans/tractors and never run them in in fact we always try to work the engine hard straight away.We have had good results doing this with engines doing 500,000 kms with no problem and they run well and are good on fuel. The thinking is that the pistons bed in quicker(some engines have been run a a cheap poor grade oil for the first 100 hours) and then they are set for life.
Does the subaru engine need to be run in or is at an old tale these days??????????

Of course it does

MAX 4,000 rev's for the 1st 1000 miles at the very least

I will be doing a couple of laps of the M25

You are supposed to run it in..laps of the M25 is generally a bad idea LOL as you need to vary speed, revs and load. A and B road cruising is better. I've just finished my 1000miles after 6 days driving, tough job but someone has to do it.
Subaru supply the car with a thinner 'running-in' oil which is changed at the first service.

Yes its a very bad idea clocking up miles on the motorway. Try and vary your driving by doing a lot of A and B roads varying your speed.

I remember reading an article on how best to run in engines in a bike mag, one tuner was saying stick it in top gear and open the throttle until the car starts pulling then let off the throttle, seemingly this causes a vacumn in the bore causing the piston ring to expand slightly thus ensuring a better cleaning of the bore and rings, don't know if this works, any engine builders out there who can help?? I'd like to know the best way of running the engine in aswell for when I get my MY03 STi in the middle of April.

Two schools of thought on running in.

1, Drive it hard, you get good power. BUT you will use oil and it wont last as long.
2, Drive it soft for the first 1000-1500 miles, and you will have an engine that will last.

Dan

Edited to add: What do I know, I drive a rotary.... 3000 mile run in period.
