Whats my MY99 worth?
#1
I have a 99 UK Turbo in Royal silver, full service history, STI 5 spoiler and full Scoobysport Decat, air con, the usual with 38k on the clock. I've been adding power with the decat and wondering whether it would be easier all round to just buy a classic wrx instead since they start at 280hp already? What are the drawbacks if any of a wrx over my uk car?
Also whats my car worth? I'm imagining I'd get more if I put the standard exhaust on (i still have it), then its a standard car apart from spoiler, just getting a feel for the market and seeing what I could do, cheers

STi is 280 bhp, and thats on 100 ron fuel. WRX is 260, or 240 on the older ones.
Personally wouldn't touch an STi with a barge pole, but they do have much better toys on them. Its not hard to get a UK car to 280.

Full decat, dawes tek 2, panel filter. £1000 all in.
I got 270 power and torque, and it was climbing at each power run after the ECU reset.

tek2 is £700 by itself isnt it?
i got the decat, that cost me around £600, dawes sounds too much like the old bleed trick to me (please correct me if i'm wrong).

270 RR figure versus 276 engine dyno figure though
Have you RR more than once on different rollers to get an average ?
I wouldnt run a dawes or any MBC without a full set of decent gauges as well. £600+, oil temp, oil pressure, boost, egt, knocklink etc. Asking for trouble IMHO.

yeah well i'm saving up for the defi BF range of gauges (same ones as you said, in a 3 way dash pod), but they are mega expensive, basically if I do go ahead instead of selling i'll get these so I can monitor things before I start to increase the power any more, i'm currently worried about overboost with my decat. But this month its new brakes time and knocklink time

Dawes is a bit more sensible than bleed, in my eyes. It doesn't bleed any air away or trick the car into thinking that there's less boost than there really is... It replaces the boost control.
The ECU still knows how much boost is in there, still knows how much air is in there and still (hopefully) has the maps to support correct running.
So it ain't a bleed valve, which is bleeding air away from the sensors and making the ECU think that something else is happening compared to the reality.
With the dawes, the ECU knows how much boost is there but just can't do anything to lessen it

oh i see, but isnt that almost as bad? i know some people swear by it but doesnt it mean that if the car reduces the boost and therefore puts not much fuel in and then the dawes decides not to reduce the boost then you'll detonate surely?
Forgive me, i'm not technically minded but from the limited knowledge I have that sounds like what'll happen, is there any info on Dawes anywhere, how can a valve stop the ecu limiting the boost?
I think i'll be safer with a tek2 and my decat with some gauges and see how it goes, perhaps a performance manifold.

The ECU will still "see" whatever boost you set the Dawes too and the fuelling will be ok to a point. As long as your ECU / fuel pump / internals are ok for the boost you are running. A dawes to 1.1 bar on a standard ecu is generally deemed to be ok. 1.25 with a Tek2 is fine too.
Do some digging, but I wouldnt sell the car to get bigger BHP
