Scooby Petrol tank size ? or fuel rip-off
#1
In the Impreza FAQ it says the 1995+ impreza has a 60 litre fuel tank.
Then why, at some petrol stations , can I fit nearly 65 (64.847 or something like that on the receipt) in mine ?
Am I being ripped off ?
or can a tank hold a little more than advertised ?
or have other people experienced this ?

omg I've never got more than 40ltrs in mine! But I never take it below the "1/4" full marker. As the need manages about 70 miles before the needle budges 140 by about half way and then plummets to the "1/4" in another 40 miles I've no idea how far I'll get on it.

:-)
I do have a knack for rolling into garages with the engine off and being completely out of fuel, I've done it 4 times !!!!!
:-)
Have found that my needle can point to the lower bar of the E and still not run out !!
And no, before anyone asks, I have NEVER had fuel surge with a low tank ;-)
Just don't like the idea of being ripped by dodgy petrol stations.

No, I wasn't being sarcastic.
I see what you are saying now. I thought alman was complaining about possible incorrect information in the owns manual regarding the size of the fule tank.
I'm a bit slow today. Not enough sleep last night..... zzzzzzz

okay, I'll say it again for the slow people at the back
if I'm paying for 65 litres of fuel - but only getting 60 as that is the size of the tank
= I'm being ripped to the tune of 5 litres.
( This I add is the WORST example I've experienced though )
I guess others won't notice it unless you do drive until empty.
Yes I do fill the filler pipe, but this would'nt account for 4/5litres. The pipe would have to be 15 feet long.
;-) And no I don't fill my car like I'm pissing up a wall,
AND WHATEVER MY GIRLFRIEND HAS TOLD YOU IS A LIE !! :-))

You need to speak your equivalent of our Trading Standards agency then. Here in the UK they are responsible for ensuring petrol pumps are accurate. Some garages over here have stickers on the pumps saying who to contact if you have a query.

Trading standards have a set tollerance for the accuracy of petrol pumps. According to rumour, it is quite a "generous" tollerance. This stems, i believe, from the days when manufacturing tollerances were a lot less than they are now, and the standard hasn't been updated to relect this.
If the allowable error was say +/- 10%, a pump could charge you for 60 litres and deliver anywhere between 54 or 66 litres.
If a petrol station knows that their pumps are rated to say 1% accuracy, they could comfortably have the pumps deliver 55 litres while indicating 60 litres delivered, ie you pay for 5 litres of fuel you've not had and they are still keeping trading standards happy.

Possibly the 6L reserve tank is in addition to the 60 main tank?
I've put 58 L in before now
check if you get the same from difference garages, then report the suspect one if you really think so.

It would be a rip-off if he paid for 65 litres by only got 40!
BTW, the most I've fitted in my MY99 is about 58 litres. I was getting fuel surge at this stage on left handers!
