My wagons docs say it was registerd in 1997, I have since found out that my cars spec makes it an 1998 ie: bucket seats, bin on dash .

I wouldn't panic just yet..... Model Year 98 came out late 97 (September???) . The obviuos difference between MY97 and MY98 is the dash change (the seats were the same).
When was your car registered and whats the model code on the vin plate?
Tony.

The '98 model, which had the forrester dash and 16" wheels, was available in late '97. The bucket seats were part of the previous update.
Sounds like you've got nothing to worry about.

In theory yes but not always correct back in the days of import quotas cars took ages to get here by boat and were in short supply (18 month waiting lists some garages were quoting), so you took what you could get. I had a brand new MY98 registered in October 1998 because if I wanted an MY99 it would be another 3 months as they hadnt got any spare and I was lucky and got a cancellation order and only waited 6 months. The model changes were usually consistent with the UK motorshow.
