Red face

According to this weeks Autocar, the new facelifted car only gets 215bhp ie no gain since MY99/01/2. I thought the MY03 had numerous mods to increase power to 225bhp

Is this a case of poor research on their part ?

If this is true, there is no doubt that with the added weight (again) of this model over the MY01/2 it will be even slower

Wasn't the extra few horses because of the ECU re-mapping to make use of 98 RON fuel?

Not sure, it says in Autocar that the strict EU regs have kept the output to 215. In Japan the standard car puts out 240

The rimoured few extra horses on the MY03 were from a modified exhaust system

I spotted that too - maybe the previously quoted 225 BHP was for a US spec car as that's the figure Subaru quote for the current stateside bug-eye?

Who knows!! It's a lottery to know what the exact power it pulls, perhaps Autocar is wrong? Considering the STi has apparently been grossly underestimated the official power figure is a little bit unreliable. As to wether it will be slower, i think we should be asking how selves how much faster....

TS,

What do you mean "grossly underestimated"?

Who cares?

You're all going to stick whacking great de-cats on them anyway to make them go as fast as classics(because they weigh slightly less than small planets an PSLewis)

The JDM car has 250ps.
Wonder y the US car has 227bhp? Even tho they have bad fuel & stricter emissions standards? Must be the way they measure the power output.

Bad fuel? You what? The quality of fuels that you can get from the pump in the states is *far* better than our slop.

Cool

Well, it wouldn't be the first error in Autocar...........

At least the Impreza seems to be back in favour this week - seems the Focus RS's glory was short lived!!

Thumbs down

Just wait until they road test it. I am sure they will find plenty of things to nit pick, especially if that anti Subaru tester/writer gets behind the wheel

As I've said b4, the fuel available in USA has a much higher Sulphur content than in EU & most Asia-Pacific countries. That is y up until now, DI petrol engines aren't introduced there. It is also the reason y BMW used a much less powerful engine in their US-spec E36 M3.
There are much more to fuel quality than Octane ratings alone.

Question

I am sure I heard somewhere that the throttle response was also going to be improved on the MY03. Will another 10 bhp come along with mods to achieve that ?

I think what the export WRX needs is the JDM engine.
The JDM engine has AVCS variable valve overlap control (on export spec cars, AVCS is exclusive only to the STi), and this should partly explain the higher torque & power of the JDM cars.
