Mojo,

I had the same problem on my car. It turned out to be a relay that was not tightened up properly. When I went over certain surfaces it got really bad. The noise sounded like it was coming out of the air vent near the off side wing mirror on the dash board.

If it sounds like a similar issue drop me an e-mail and I will go into more detail.

Folks,

My MY00 seems to have developed a really annoying metallic vibration type noise somewhere around the dashboard. I can't seem to work out where it's coming from.
It's not there when idling and I don't think it's engine related. It happens when I drive over rough tarmac. At first I thought it was the dashboard trim, but I can't find anything vibrating.
Is there heat shields or something like that behind the dash that might be vibrating?

It's really beginning to drive me crazy!

Cheers

I think there's a lot of odd reflections in there -- sounds appear to come from one place but are actually coming from somewhere else. I thought my car was seriously knackered, but it turned out to be some CDs rattling around in the passenger door pocket. Check stuff in the glovebox too.

I know what you mean. I don't mind the odd rattle, but this vibration seems to be far more annoying.
Carl, I agree it's time to empty the glovebox at the weekend and do some test driving. I even thought it might just have been the discloc under the passenger seat, but I've eliminated that from my enquiries.

Can anyone else reccommend places to look?

Cheers

Sounds like it could be the brake pipe rattling against the bulkhead - open the bonnet and look at the pipes against the bulkhead on the drivers side (3 or so? can't remember) there is a rubber sleeve around 1 that generally doesn't get placed between the pipe and the bulkhead when the cars are finished up, slip it in there and away u go.

Mine has a similar noise - sounds to me like its something to do with the passenger air bag as I've done the glove box emptying and pipe checking bits.

Mess with the air bag if you dare

Chuckster,

It's funny you should mention them, cos the first week I had the car I had terrible vibration noises when I reached certain revs and as you said they were the cause. However this vibration is completely different and seems to be related to the road surface. Might double check them to be sure though.

It only seems to have started since it was in for it's 15,000m service.

Blue,

Have you had Subaru look at it? What have they said?

I really don't think I'll be prodding about with my airbag thanks all the same.

There must be something that can be done to fix it.
The stereo does help though..... perhaps it's time for the ScoobySport exhaust I've been promising myself for ages!

Remove what you can and drive. In search of a rattle I emptied the glove box, removed the stereo front, took out the ash tray.......and hey presto took out the gig lighter. Rattle now gone by pulling the lighter a quarter of an inch out!!!
