Aerodynamics etc MY00 - MY03

Bored with all the 'I raced a XXX', 'What's the best XXX' so thought I'd try and start a new topic to provoke a bit of discussion.
I (as probably everyone else on here ) am looking towards a new car. (Even when I've only had a car 1 week, I'm still looking ).
So far I can see me in an MY01 with Prodrive lights and PPP, or a new MY03. Would love an STi but small children are expensive
I currently have an MY00 wagon with a few mods
I know that stats are a bit pointless in the real world when it comes to day to day driving. I mean I can be pootling along relaxing under 4.5K in my wagon while my brother in his Civic Type-R is working hard to keep up
You rarely red-line you car to the max day in day out but if anything I like to look at the 30-70 through the gears stats and 0-100.
As Evo and a few others have it :
MY00, 30-70 5.5 ish, 0-100 14.6
MY01, 30-70 5.8 ish, 0-100 18 ish
MY03, 30-70 ?.? ish, 0-100 ?? ish
Basically the 0-100 of the MY01 is poor. Funnily enough though it is still quite quick to 80. From 80-100 the MY01 is pig slow.
So why is this?
The MY00 and MY01 have basically the same BHP/torque and A.F.A.I.K the same gearing. This lead me to think that maybe the MY01 just runs into a brick wall aerodynamically at 80.
This however suggests that the MY00 is far superior aerodynamically, hmmmm don't think so.
Is it all down to the weight increase MY00-01?
The new MY03 as we all know has been made more aerodynamic and will have a small power increase (probably weight as well though ).
Does this mean that Subaru knew the MY01 was as aerodynamic as a brick? Will the slight power increase help the current slow model?
Or are MY03 owners, as I expect, going to have to resort to the PPP or Ecutek to get their car the way they want it?
I think Subaru should have had 2 models, WRX with 250 (270 PPP) BHP - 22K, Sti with 280 (310 PPP)BHP - 26K.
Any comments? Come on this BB is becoming stale !
Doofus.

I've been holding off from buying a new Impreza when I heard that the could be the MY03 facelift - seen the pic's and I'm happy I waited.
I'm guessing I'm going to PPP it soon after I get it (not ordered it yet, guess the dealers will be pushing the discounted current model for some time to come), reason for ppp - need it to be within warranty (company car opt-out).
I read a lot about the differences in std. WRX to PPP WRX so I'm looking forward to seeing/feeling it for myself.
Wonder what difference the improvements they have made in the exhaust/engine department on the MY03 will have on the PPP - will it be less noticeable?

Totally agree about your BHP figs the WRX and STi should have and what the PPP should give on top.
Subaru need to raise their game, as the other manufacturers have and are snapping at their heals, a few years ago not much came close........

The drag coefficient of the MY01 is about 3% lower than that of the classic shape car (but both are very high) so unless there were any mods it won't be the aerodynamics that are holding it back.

As far as I can remember the aero mods to the new shape were to improve the aerodynamics of the rally car. At least that what Subaru were saying. The aerodynamics of rally cars aren't so concerened about the drag coefficient but more about how the car flies through the air (i.e. to keep it level so it lands on four wheels). Rally cars never really go *that* quick in real terms so drag is not much of an issue.
All imho of course..!

When Autocar timed a MY01 to 100mph they got 16.9 secs. Evo mentioned in the text of the roadtest in 2000 that they figured the car on a blustery day, so aerodynamics may have played a part especially if they were driving into the wind. Annoyingly when they compared the car to the RS Focus in this months issue they used the same figures
