Which bike rack?

Been thinkin' lately that i should be a bit healthier and take the old mountain bike out now and agen. There's not that many good places to ride that are close so need to transport the bike on the back of the Scoob.
Anybody got any good recommendations for bike racks. Somethin' not too big and that isn't too intrusive or that will potentially damage/scratch the boot?
Cheers,
Tony.

The Halfords '3 bike' bike rack works ok for me - although you'd be hard pushed to get more than 2 on it. It has 6 straps which hook onto the front edge of the boot lid(2), the sides of the boot (2) and ones which I attach to the 'lashing eye' and the exhaust mount under the bumper. The rack rests on foam pads, and the frame passes through the gap under a prodrive spoiler. The rack is solid enough to keep 2 bike in place while the car is being enjoyed along Welsh B roads - without marking the car.

I use a rack manufactured by Rhode Gear which is an American company. Don't have a contact number but try a few of the big MTB shops or search the net. It fits under the standard high level rear wing on my RB5, is stable up to 80+mph and doesn't mark the car.

I've got an STi and therefore an aluminium boot so I don't feel comfortable hanging a couple of bikes off the back of it.
IIRC the Thule kit was not cheap, but it is modular. You buy a pair of roof bars which you can use with any car, then a foot pack for the Impreza. This gives you a roof rack that you can use for anything. Then a cycle carrier to go on top and you should be able to get 4 on a scoob.
The whole lot can be locked - bars to car, cycle carrier to bars and bike to carrier and they do a single key system so that all your components have the same key.
I also use the cycle carriers on my wife's Jeep. I've also got a roof box, ski carriers etc.
It doens't take much longer to put on than a boot mounted system, but it does mean that you can still get into the boot with the bikes on the car. It also means that you don't need a trailer board (and electrics). Putting the bikes on and getting them off again is much quicker than a boot mounted system.

I've tried a couple of rear mounted racks on the scoob and have not been happy.
What I have now is an IKEA roof rack (same as Mondeo) which costs something like £8 and you can return within 3 months for a full refund and 4 roof mounted racks.
The racks were £14.95 each and are lockable. The same can be bought in any of the French Hypermarkets for approx £4.99
Make sure you use the racks where the bikes are the normal way up, I've seen a couple of the upside down varieties break.
Quick and safe to use, good for 120 mph.

Carl, I presume you have a 4 door saloon? I had a look in Ikea a while back and the only scoob one was for a 5 door. Could you let me know as I have started doing a lot of biking but I'm using the works van at the mo

Yes it is a 4 door saloon.
I phoned and asked, they have a guide in the office that lists more cars than the chart you see in the wharehouse.
Can't remember what there reference was.
