Now don't all flame me at once
Its come to a point where the Scoob is getting on a little now. She's a UK94 with almost 66K on the clock. (Complete rebuild with Cosworth pistons last year mind )
I used to Hillclimb the Scoob, but don't anymore as repair costs were very high so bought a 205GTi as a toy / track car. The Scoob is now used soley for commuting about 250 miles per week.
Sadly I think its time for something a little more economical as a diet of SUL at 18MPG is getting a little much.
Has anyone owned / got a VW Golf GTi PD, one of the new 130BHP turbo diesels ?
I'm looking maybe towards one of these for my day-in day-out commuting cars.
Opinions please....
Convince me I'd be silly to sell the Scoob
Thanks
Mark

Hiya
The new 130 PDi is said to be pretty impressive with an abundance of torque and MPG that will see you at the petrol station once every fortnight
VW Driver magazine, that was on the desk at my dealership yesterday had an article of the car going around the Nurburgring and being given a pasting. They managed to get 48.9 MPG on the way there on the M-way!
Try one, good build quality

Yes it is also the case that the Subaru, the love of my life had to go due to the second coming. ( The wife and I are expecting our first child Christmas day.)
I sold the Scooby and bought a Volkswagon Bora TDI PD 130 BHP Sport SE. Not a bad car does what it says on the label and the build quality is great, no rattles ( apart from the engine !!! ) and does 52 MPG at 85/90 MPH. Picks up well and if you super chip them you end up with a claimed 170 BHP and 295 ftlb torque.

So is a Bora/Golf cheaper then or what?
OK 52mpg I understand, but you can get that with a diesel Lupo, Arosa or Corsa. What exactly is the reason for changing? Much cheapness? Look at a Skoda or SEAT or dare I say Proton.
Impreza is an ideal 4 door family saloon. Me no understandee why new parents see impending birth as a reason to change.
Now if it was an Lotus Elsie or whatever and you wanted baby in the back I could understand it.
And no that wasn't a typo.
You want your head testing.

Barry not all of us are as well off as you mate, my wife has her own business and will have to give it up for a short while to have and look after the baby. The other reasons for the move to a TDI Bora are the insurance is a fraction of the Scoobys, the increase in my mileage with work and Spiraling servicing costs. Yes it is big enough to be a family car but it is not what I would call the ideal family car. I am and will miss the Scooby and I will be back just not yet, sorry if you find us changing our Scoobys as upsetting as we have but we will all get over it and one day in the not so far off future be back with one of the fastest A to B cars in the world.

Reasons for changing..
Its about time for a change.
Insurance is due shortly
Hefty fuel bill.
Fancy something different. No doubt I'll come back to something swift (STi or Evo) eventually.
Cheapness ~ no not really out and out cheapness. I'm looking for quality build, some improvement in economy with enough pick up & go not to bore me silly.
Bear in mind I have quite a mad 205 GTi which is used for Hillclimbs so I can play in that.
I'm not saying the Golf PD is going to replace the fantastic all-round abilities of my Blackscooby, but then I don't expect it to.
BS.

Sssshh. You fool. He asked us to persuade him not to get rid of it.
Anyway, why not exactly ideal? OK it hasn't got rear facing TV in the headrests. What else?
I understand VW servicing costs are among the more expensive. AND my wife's Golf drinks oil faster than I drink beer. (OK slight exaggeration maybe). She doesn't run her own business though. Isn't "running your own business" supposed to be the holy grail of work and path to instant riches?
My insurance is £475 fully comp, so we're perhaps not talking about the same animal here.
To be honest, I couldn't care less what anyone else drives, but thought I'd enter into the spirit of things and try to dissuade yer man.
Good luck with the Messiah, he is after all a "naughty boy". Kids are great fun!

I paid £14200 for mine 4 months old ex demo with 6000 on the clock fully loaded from VW which meant it came with the 3 year 60000 mile warranty, the badge on the back says Bora TDI with the TD in red. If you buy an import expect the same pathetic treatment as you get from Subaru when it come to imports.
As for being a dad oh **** am I wondering what next, keep opening draws and finding clothes that I could not even get my foot in !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for you BarryK I hate you because you have what I want, what spec is you car and how old are you as I cant insure the Bora for that never mind the Impreza.

I changed from MY00 4 door to MY01 Wagon (both turbos) two weeks ago. No change in insurance.
I was 43 on Saturday just gone, never been caught, and just over seven years ago I was panicking like you two!!
It's great you'll enjoy it.

Have you worked out how much you will lose by by selling the scoob for a new car? I would imagine that adds up to few gallons of petrol and service costs.
I have a little'un on the way in about a month's time - so I chose to buy a 5-D for a little added convenience - and the only reason I bought a ScoobySport backbox was to let the gentle burbling lull the babe to sleep ... honest!

Lunchie,
I currently don't know how much it would be worth. But I'm guessing around 7K. Which failed into insignificance compaired to what it had spent on it last year...
I reckon I spent around 10K on it last year, what with Engine rebuild, new gearbox, hyrid turbo, APEXI kit....
Still I think its time for a change.
BS (Wearing sensible hat!)

UK will no longer get the 150bhp TDI engine that VW were going to bring in....
BUT....www.upsolute.com
£200 buys you an upgrade from your 130PD to 163bhp and 298lbs/ft torque(!)
Remapped ECU returns same codes as standard to the VAG diagnostic equipment too....

Barry I'm saving £8-£10k per year comparing a MY99PPP and a 330d. Factor in the Golf costs £15k less than the 330d, and gets better mpg, the savings should be even greater!

Mik were do you get the remap done as I know Superchips do a set up for them producing the same figures but costing £350 +VAT.
Gary how you are you mate, went to Blackpool and back fully loaded with 5 adults, ran around for 3 days and went to work and back on £10 !!!!! That's over 160 miles and all of them were in traffic and flat out when possible.
The Volkswagon are not even in the same class when comparing performance to the Scooby unless we are talking fuel economy and build quality. I love the Scooby, I love the life style around it and I love rallying which is why the car was built and we all know each other but needs must and if you see a silver Volkswagon Bora flashing you or at a track day with a sad looking bloke next to it with a tear in his eye say hello.

'ey up LeeMac,
I know what ya mean. I talk about floggin it, but after a good drive I wouldn't change it for the world.
Then have to full up with SUL AGAIN and come complete circle
Oh and then it goes to Alex's... "We could just do this or that..."
Change my mind more often that I fill up with fuel....

get yourself a legacy estate, loads of room for kids, shopping, dogs, monster stereo and anything else you can think of.
same drivetrain as a preza, better build quality (so i'm told) and come in 200 bhp flavour or twin turbo 280bhp flavour.
the 200 bhp version does about 25-27 mpg over a tankfull (depending on how many people you have to preach the gospel of scooby too).
oh yes, did i mention you can get a nice late one for around two thirds of the cost of an impreza.
go on you know it makes sense,

Darren,
That's the only downside...they have no UK dealer at the moment (which is a fairly big minus).
Upsolute are recognised as "THE" tuner for VAG turbodiesels (although they do remaps for pretty much anything).....have a look at

No BM is mine - but get car allowance Sad thing was I didn't drive the scoob THAT hard - averaged 25mpg although did get it down to 9mpg at times Still cost me £17k per year though
Will come along to NM6 if have the Caterham by then - and its dry
Darren - fit and well, and surviving the post-scooby era with surprising ease
