Cool

I had a 'tassle' with an Elise on the way home night before last - they are very quick!

Im fairly sure that the car concerned was slightly modded but then so was I (PPP with about 245Bhp in MY01) I kept with him upto about a ton twenty and then left him behind.

After which we both got plastered by a 400Bhp M5!

They are very quick. Low weight means great Power to weight ratio and as any competition driver will tell you, that is what makes all the difference!

Mak.

Edited to add that all this took place on a private road somewhere in the outer-hebrides.

Question

My mates got an Elise - standard spec '97 with 118bhp.

He says it will beat a standard scoobie - 215bhp - to 60mph from standstill.

I've been in it and sure it's quick but reckon the scoobie will be head to head.

Most mags tend to quote the 0-60 for a scoobie less than 6 secs although subaru say officially higher.

Agree or not?????

Official Manufacturer's figures are always under-estimated.
Usually driven by some old bloke with slippers and a cloth cap for the top speed and 0-60 times.

To be honest, I don't think there will be much in it, probably 0.5-1s
Remember, the feeling of velocity will be greater in the Lotus since you're lower to the ground too.

The solution to this? Lose some weight.

Half as much power but half the weight: I reckon it'll be pretty even.

There isn't a lot in it.

Up in Scotland, we share most of our events with the Elise owners, and the car are generally very evenly matched.

The Elise can struggle a bit with traction off the line, but once in 2nd gear it's very nippy indeed.

Up to 80 or 90mph, there really isn't much in it between the cars, and it will come down to who got the better start (ie didn't bog down or get wheelspin/fry the clutch), but after that the extra power of the Impreza starts to show and it will start to pull away.

Around Knockhill, again there is very little in it. The Elise is faster around the twisty bits, but loses out towards the end of the straights, and overall there isn't much in it.

Some of the Elises up here are now quite modified, with some having between 160 and 200bhp (which aint bad in something weighing not much more than 700Kg), and these are actually faster in a straight line than even modified Imprezas, and usually have the handling to show a very clean pair of heels around the corners as well.

Even in the wet (S02s are the tyre of choice for Elise owners as well), there isn't much difference, apart from the slowest of corners where the Elise can lose a bit of traction.

Two very different ways of achieving very similar results. The Elise is certainly a lot more "involving" to drive, but likewise can also be tiring on longer journeys.

Easy solution to this....lauch your scooby You'll nail him 0-30 it'll be even from 30-80 and then you'll start to pull away again after that

That much is true. With a none brutal start it would be pretty much neck and neck to 60mph I'd imagine. I'd love an elise as a second car but I still love the scooby as a primary car.

Don't worry Kenny....

You'll soon get that 'wind in your hair feeling' when your windscreen falls out!

It'll save you buying an Elise...

Just when you thought it was safe...Whey hey...!

Getting towed by your 'convertible' would be like following that scrap lorry in the Volkswagen advert, where the guy avoids all the bits falling off the back.....

Heh heh....

<Serious mode>

Got it booked in yet?
