Hi All

We written new ad serving software to attempt to reduce the load on the server which we think has been causing the majority of the slow down over the last couple of weeks.

If you notice anything strange with the ads, could you let me know here.

Note..
Threads will only contain the new ad code when they have been altered (by posting a reply / editing a message, etc) so this will not cause an instant speed up. It will take time for the threads to be but I hope we'll notice an improvement over the next couple of days.

All the best

Simon

Si, is it only threads or also forum lists ? List on General already seems to load quicker.

hi theo

any pages which are dynamic will contain the new code.. that includes the main forum list, thread list, holding pages like "thank you for posting", etc

The rest (the threads) will only be updated when the actual thread updates.

There may be a improvement in speed on the dynamic pages immediately, but the main benefit will be when the old adserver is not serving any ads at all, as it was a general load on the server caused by this software which (we think) is causing the slow down.

Time will tell.

Thanks for the positive report though

Thumbs up

Simon - If you want I could organise a few people to post in all the threads. Might give blowdog something of a headache though

Does seem a bit quicker since it came up again

This is great news. Are you *sure* though or is it just that it *seems* to be quicker?

fingers crossed.

Web,

My connection is pretty consistent (cable), each time I test it, so yes at the moment the bbs is faster after the 'routine maintenance screen' I got. It may be a coincidence (lower traffic etc...) but it surely did pick up.

There is also something I haven't quite figured out ... my browser is set at refreshing a page at each visit. When replying before, I always had to refresh (F5 or CTRL-F5) to see my reply, but since a few minutes, I can see the reply after being redirected to the thread. Maybe totally unrelated, but it is strange, not having changed a thing on my PC...

Oh and one thing, if Scoobynet seems stuck, I always quickly try the new bbs software, and surprise ... it keeps working most of the time even if UBB is completely dead.

hi theo

that *is* strange. There is every chance it *is* related though, as I've had a couple of reports lately of this happening. that would be a nice by product.

The new bbs software is SO SO SO much more efficient in the windows environment.

UBB is not the *most* efficient software anyway, but in fairness it is far more suited to UNIX.

When we stress tested the two..

The current BBS software could handle a mere 2.6 requests (for dynamic pages) a second before it locked the whole board out, where as the new software could handle over 500 a second without *any* noticeable slow down at all.

Cheers

Simon

*cough* of course you mistyped and that should read 5 a second *cough* otherwise the people from a certain forum might start to argue that flood control would not be needed anymore *cough*.

Cool

Hey - 500 posts per second. Do we really need flood control now?
