Hi
Here's a challenge. You have to pretend you are having a conversation with a Sheriff, who has stopped you for speeding. The thing is you want to get away with a warning, but without incriminating yourself.
Sheriff: Do you know why I have stopped you.
Me: No sir.
Sheriff: Do you know what speed you were traveling at.
Me: No I don't
Sheriff: Can you see that 40mph sign over there.
Me: Yes
Sheriff: Well you were doing 51mph.
Me: Sorry I didn't realise.
DOH!! You have just potentially incriminated yourself by saying sorry.
You never know this may help all of us one day.
Cheers.

Yep
Sorry
If you say sorry it could be said in court you were admiting the offence.
After all you normally say sorry when you bugger somthing up and you are in trouble. (Usually with the wife) 1 dodgy wife. PX for 97R scooby with low mileage.
Cheers

lcha,
I wouldn't bother. Although the sheriffs are pompous old gits with chains around their necks, there's plenty of people policemen in white hats. Traffic officers, I think they're called

Hmmm
I got into trouble a few years back for what I said!
The officer said 'did you realise you were doing 140mph' I said 'really.........., so what'
That certainly made me chuckle at the Magistrates court - they said I had an arrogant contempt for the law - I said 'could I have that in writing please'
Then ask if they take credit card for the fine cos I'd like the point on my credit card
12 months ban!
Interesting point though - if there are more than one in the car and they start chasin you - pull up at the side, pile out and wait at the side. All deny who was driving - if they cant prove it they cant do anything -n saved me big time a few months ago - it took them a while to turn the car round to go after me! - what the he** - police are scumbags

As far as I know, you don't have to worry about self-incrimination (from just saying stuff anyway - obviously if you bash the fellow over the head that's pretty incriminating!) until you have been cautioned by the officer that anything said by you may be used in evidence against you. So if stopped, it's best to admit to the speed you were doing (roughly, and remember speedos overread i.e. if you were doing 100, say "around 90?"). This is what I've heard.
Maybe andy our resident copper can help on this - is it best to own up, or should you say you were not sure what speed you were doing?
