Question

A little confused about these.

I can see that having one feeding an induction kit cone filter would be OK but I'd have thought just ramming air into the engine bay would be wrong.

Air flows through the radiator and into the engine bay, on the rally car the vents were put there to exhaust the hot air out of the engine bay, the fast flowing air going across the bonnett being low pressure and sucking the hot air out and aiding the flow of air through the radiator.
I would have thought the bonnett scoops would pressurise the engine bay with air at high speed and this would actually cut down the amount of air flowing through the radiator.

If you had a front mounted intercooler these scoops would have totaly the wrong effect.

Just my thoughts.

Lee

Thanks for the response lads, yes Ian thats just the ticket

Logiclee, you probably do have a point, technically the air flow would be 'interupted' by the introduction of air at the bonnet vents.

I think the addition of a small scoop on the one side would not have too much of an effect, and lets face it we are only talking theory here.

If you 'rammed' air into the engine bay and it was a sealed area, the engine bay would get to saturation point, I can see that the air through the rad would have a very difficult time trying to get into the engine bay as it would be at positive pressure.

(This is how operating theatres work)

I may run a temp sensor to find out what temp differences there are with the scoop/not scoop.

Cant edit my posts, so in addition....seeing that the engine bay is NOT a sealed area it should still 'flow' air.

The added air at the scoop would (probably) just add to the ram air flow and disappear out of the back of the car!

Cheers for now

I was thinking of doing this, but what happens on a very rainy day.... the scoop would feed water to the filter/air flow meter...??? is there away round this...?

I've got a pair of these on my car, plus HKS Induction kit. Yes on a rainy day water does go in the scoop, but I've never had problems with it at all, and I have removed blanking plates from both vents, so the battery and the relays and fuses under there do get a bit wet, but as said, I've not had a problem.

Why did I get them? well to be honest, it's mainly for looks.

The only reason i was concerned is that ive got a blitz SUS induction kit and i think it will let let water through more so than the other filters...!! still considering it though...

Perhaps if you keep the blanking plate in the car with an 8mm spanner you could quickly put it on if the heavens open ?

Markus, do you remember how much and from who ?
