Browsing in the for sale section again I see there are a number of very nice scoobs for sale at *cheap* prices.

Most cars advertised on here have been looked after by entusiasts and would make good private buys, certainly better value than going to a dealer.

Just wondering why they dont seem to sell very well? Does everyone prefer to go back to dealers because of the great service and warranty you get

One of the problems may be that most people need to sell a car to buy one and dealer part-ex is less hassle if more costly..

I for one will be looking at the scoobynet classifieds as my first choice when I get my first scooby in a few months time. As you say, they have generally been looked after by enthusiasts and represent better VFM than from a dealer.

I could equally say that I have been looking for one for over a month but nobody was selling one I wanted, could afford and was a reasonable distance away.

I found one a few weeks ago which I was prepared to buy but in the end the owner decided to keep it as he could not get the car he wanted. I found a car on Loot last week and am hoping to pick it up next week if it checks out OK. If it does not a work mate of Davyboy is selling a car I am interested in.

Buyers are out there it is just a matter of right car, right time, right place and right price. Part of the problem might be that prices, especially on Scoobynet, seem to drop daily so you are never sure when to go for it.

There is also the problem on Scoobynet that a lot of us already have Scoobies that we are quite happy with (give or take a few mods...) so the audience of the ads is actually much smaller than most people realise.

(All IMHO of course)

I'm waiting for Cryptwalk to sell another type RA for the same price again.

Good question, I was going to post something similar a while ago.

I think the main problem is that most people are simply not willing to spend more than 10K privately on a car. They like the reasurance and backup of buying from a dealer (no matter how morthless that id)

So what about the dreamers in Top Marques who advertise their MY00 Impreza for 15K-16K?? I would have to say that the Prices on Scoobynet are far more reflective of the actual value of these cars but even then it takes ages to sell.

Prices also seem to have fallen heavily in the last 6-12 months which makes me very glad I got rid of mine when I did. I got more for my MY00 from a dealer 7 months ago than people on here are asking for private sales.

Couldn't believe there was an MY01 on here a few weeks ago (admitedly an import) that went for £13500

Speaking to the dealer I sold my car too, he was saying that in the early days he had customers buying a new Impreza each year and they were only loosing £1500 each time (back in the days of 6-12 month waiting lists).

I had exactly this. Handed my STI back to the finance company 2 months ago, 'cos despite it being in perfect nick, and fairly low priced, there wasn't much interest. It was borderline -ve equity, and I didn't want the hassle of spending months trying to sell it with all the risks involved.

I think the main reason is that prices are dropping like stones at the moment (with high insurance, and new models out all the time). So people probably are buying, but just not at the price you want/need.

I have just brought my first scooby privately off here
got a very very nice imported STI at a very very nice price and with me being the ripe old age of 40 insurance was not a major problem.
So the Beast is a very happy Bunny

I recently sold my MY00 - 53k miles, fssh etc I got £11300 for it in a private sale..... and it cost me 2 editions of Autotrader and 2 editions of Top Marques and in the end the person who bought it had seen the free ad I placed on www.pistonheads.com!!

I've got about £5500 to spend and have been looking for a 97 Blue Sport with less than 50k on the clock for about a month now. Not seen anything yet. But as they say patience is a virtue...

mine is a good car in good shape at what I think is a sensible price.

I think people are frightened off by insurance costs and running costs but remember these are great fun cars!

I think you have me confused with chris (mellow yellow) katana, I have never owned a Type RA let alone sold one.

How can you slate the o1 after seeing mine every day

My STi7 has been advertised on here for a couple of weeks now. It looks like I'm going to have to sell to (or through) a Trader. Pity this, because they will no doubt sell it for a good deal more than I am asking privately and give me much less (this I know from bitter experience). This way the true seller and true buyer both lose out and dealer wins all.

The things we have do just to avoid the dreaded theives, cold callers, test pilots and tyre kickers!!

It's all about having the right spec for the right seller at the right time

As a follow on from this ....

I'm on the lookout for a 5-door turbo.

However, I need someone who can take a credit card payment, but more importantly who could offer some form of warranty.

I'm heavily reliant on my car, and after having a TVR ....nuff said.

Ho hum ... dealer network here I come.

ref warranty, UK supplied cars come with 3 year Subaru warranty which is transferrable and can be extended to 4/5 years unlimited mileage. So you should be able to find what you want privately, may be a problem with the credit card though!

Sure you want a 5 door? got a lovely 4 door for sale with the above warranty
