As topic heading.
I have discovered that its not loadcover or internal lock mechanism that is rattling, but the whole back door.
I've checked seals, catches and rubbers and all seem to be in place.
Any similar problems for fellow wagon drivers?

thought i had this problem licked by beechdale who admitted it is very hard to adjust the mecahism.
i would love some way of curing this permanently.
Where are the Stops you mention Harry Boy.
btw i assume we are all talking pre bug eye cause if this aint sorted on the bug eye they could be down one customer (seriously it can be that annoying).

I had the same problem on MY00 wagon. The "semicircle" bar that the boot lock clicks into is adjustable. You have to remove the plastic mouldings either side of the bar and there you'll find two large screws. Loosen and push bar towards interior, retighten and my problem was sorted. Not a sound from the boot door now but loads from the dash! Hope this makes sense.

If the noise is coming from the passenger side it could be the tools moving about - this happened to me earlier on this week.
Tools located just behind rear left wheel arch with jack

Well, mine was coming from the side panels in the boot area - put sticky rubber along the glass where the panels touch it slightly - all sorted, god it was driving me nuts!!
My bl00dy clutch pedal is STILL rattling!!

I've had some annoying rattle for ages, which I can't suss out at all.
The noise seems to be coming from the rear near side, and sounds very much like a trim rattle rather than a metalic one.
I thought it may be the load cover, but the rattle remains when I remove it.
Mines an MY98 btw.

I had the same rattle which I managed to cure. It is the tailgate rattling on the hoop at the bottom of the tailgate opening.
You need to make the tailgate pull in tighter to the rubbers.
I did this by taking the hoop bracket off and elongating the mounting holes slightly and then bolting it back on in a position nearer to the inside of the boot. That should solve it.

"Loosen and push bar towards interior": but the rattle is still there! It's been four (4) years now that I'm looking for that annoying tailgate rattle :-(

I've had two different rattles / trim noises - both "solved"
1) First was cured by the dealer who packed the tailgate lock with grease. Bliss
2) Second cured by taking the shelf off - annoying clonky noise which I thought was from the jack & tools

never mind Harry boy mine is MY 99 slightly more agricultural in design than yours ie precious little adjustment any where i tried stuffing a small rag around the catch which works temporarily but i would love a permanent fix

... and I thought I was going mad.
My (MY99 wagon) rattle seems to be coming from the rear passenger side of the car. With the radio on you can't hear it at all, and to be honest I only hear it going very slowly or on a rough road.
I was convinced it was the boot cover knocking against the tailgate or one of the rear seats moving a bit, but after reading this thread I now think it's got to be the tailgate.
Anyone else think their 'knock' was coming from the same place?
J.

I think the rattle is coming from something in de backdoor (cable for the 3th stoplight or windowheating), I've opened the trim, but I can't find it... Thanks for your help! (Thank God for the radio!)

Good response guys.
I've been on holiday and just checked the thread.
MY97 wagon rattle is def. the tailgate as I have stripped everything out when fitting sound deadening and it still rattled.
Will try to adjust rubber bungs and door catch as suggested.
700 miles in the Highlands with full camping/fishing/outdoor gear in the back and the door never rattled. I bet as soon as I clear it all out it'll start again!!!
