Strange Bubbling/Boiling Noise?

I've noticed this recently..
When I start my car after it has been stood for more than a few minutes (but is still warm), I sometimes can hear a bubbling/boling water type noise at about 1500 rpm, which seems to be coming from behind the dash on the drivers side. It's possible it may be coming from the engine bay i suppose.
Once it has done it for about 10 seconds, i can't hear it anymore, and it won't do it again.
Anyone any ideas what it might be?
Cheers
Andy

I've experienced a similar sound, but under totally different circumstances...
When I have the steering on full-lock, I can hear a quiet bubbling noise from behind the dash. I assume it's to do with the power-steering, but I don't know what.

Mine did the burbling or bubbling kind of sound when started from cold. Turned out that it was caused by coolant level being low.
What happened was that when the car was cold, the coolant was completely drained out from the expansion tank and some air got into the engine. When the engine was started this air bubbled through the heater and I could hear it. This stopped very soon after starting because the water expands and pushes the air out when it heats up.
The cure was to fill in some more coolant.
Note that bubbles in cooling system can also be caused by various other things, including leaks in the pipes and blown head gaskets.

Sometimes I've got a very quite water rushing sound from behind the bulkhead on pull away (MY99 wagon 26K miles). I reckon it started after the last service (Mar 2002), but I only noticed it about a month ago when starting and pulling away without a CD blaring!
Only happens on first start-up of the day, but not every start-up. It's not got any worse in the last month, and so I suspect an air pocket in the cooling/heating system somewhere.
Next service (Sep 2002) I'll get Subaru to get it out.
J.
PS. Sounds like jah (above post) has hit it on the head. Will be checking coolant level tonight. Thanks.
