how to launch?
#1
What's the best way to get a good 'launch' with an AWD turbo car, specifically a MY01 WRX?
I'm new to AWD and to turbo's and keep getting bogged down on the change from 1st to 2nd.
Obviously I don't want to wreck any clutch/gearbox components!

Stef is the man to ask but from what i hear (aint done it myself) is up to 4k and let out with your foot on the clutch thus creating slip and not killing the transmission (i think?!!)

It always surprises me that a (any) car can do a quick get away when standing still yo don't have the air feeding into the engine but more importantly the intercooler / turbo.
I mean, once on the move you have alot of air being drawn into the engine yet "on the lights" you can still pull away with the same vigour. I guess once you get moving just a bit it all sorts itself out but these 4k launches still work.
Just me being too logical

Hi,
I've got a UK MY00 turbo. The fastest way to launch is sit it on the rev limit then let the clutch out as fast as you can - if your clutch holds out it'll go like a rocket (Not done it myself but seen others who have). Apart from being the quickest way to get off the line it's probably the quickest way to knacker the transmission, clutch in particular!!
I normally rev mine to 2-2.5k, this seems to get the turbo spinning without getting too much boost. I then let the clutch out smoothly but quickly (not slipping it) pressing the accelerator a little more to build the boost. Once the clutch is out I just nail the accelerator!
You can't have your foot down unless the clutch is right out; once the turbo boost builds it'll just slip the clutch + fry it.
Works well 4 me + kind to the clutch

In My UK94 I generally use the technique of 4500 ~ 5000RPM and quickly bring the clutch up. This brings about wheelspin. Change just before the revlimiter cuts in, and ****** 2nd. Wheelspin again throughout the rev range, but it moves forward very rapidly and doesn't bog down.
Use this technique in Hillclimbs and Sprints.
Using AP Sprung Paddle clutch.
**WARNING**
The above techiques reduced my gearbox to a 3 speeder, (1st, 4th and 5th) resulting in a new box at great expense.....
Also on my 3rd AP Paddle clutch, and 2nd flywheel.
Subaru ownership can seriously damage your wealth ~ But ain't it fun

Fastest way is 6k+ revs and dump the clutch. However, that doesn't do your gearbox, clutch etc. much good but certianly gets you off the line very quickly.
4K rpm and a very quick feed of the clutch seems to work better. Aim to keep the revs. at about 4k all the way through lifting your foot up off the clutch pedel. Drops much lower than 4k and it'll bog.
Another way is to fit a launch control widget (under 100 pounds) so that you can be at 3.5k rpm and full throttle. This way the engine will be making good boost even standing still and you can feed the clutch in very quickly, not bog and not do major damage to your drivetrain (it's all relative).
Very difficult to do is to blip the throttle up and down to redline, but actually floor it when you blip it. This will spin up the turbo and if you catch it just right, i.e. as the revs start to drop, the amount of boost you will have will be better than if you just sat on the line at 4k rpm but partial throttle. Hope that makes sense.
Or you could just go and get a full on launch control system with individual wheel speed sensors, cut in rpm limiters etc. Makes for the perfect launch everytime, but yawn, not as much fun.
Cheers

I did dozens of runs at Santa Pod before my gearbox finally gave up the ghost (replaced at 48k under warranty! However, not once have I ever 'dumped' the clutch.
I do something similar to what Ian descibes. Basically I rev the engine between 5,000-5,500 revs, then when the lights change I simply floor the throttle and lift the clutch at the same rate, if that makes sense. I then change gear (quickly) around 6500 revs.
I'm not aware of any Scoob with a faster 60ft time (best indication of good launch) at The Pod anyway.
I also have an uprated AP clutch.
Stef.

I've found that it's more fun to get the girl rolling first (especially at lights) cos whatever is trying to "have" you at da lights think that they've done ya and then nail it and mosey on by......at a great rate of knots
Really kind to the clutch that way.
