With or without VAT?

90% of us have to pay VAT so the prices should be with VAT and let the other 10% work out what the without VAT price is

Is it better for suppliers to advertise inclusive or exclusive of VAT?
I for one hate seeing a price and then in small print finding the words "plus VAT"
I do like to see inclusive of VAT. Kinda what you see is what you get type thing.
Just wondered
Discuss!

I thought all prices had to show VAT unless selling business to business. Definitely show prices with VAT pls its really annoying to find out that its 17.5% more afterwards.

I think Edward is right, they are all advertising the price of the goods, as with the wholesalers like Macro etc.
The VAT is not Income as far as the suppliers are concerned - it goes strait to Customs & Excise.
You might be able to persuade them to show the gross price (inc.Vat) along side the net price.
Perhaps we could get them to show the Total cost - ie including any painting and fitting. I had a typical example the other day. I won't mention any names or products but £95 net + VAT + Delivery + Painting + Fitting came in at £217.38. - I nearly fell off my chair!!

Tricky one for us....
In mail order terms now.. way more than half of our daily output goes to either Non VAT'ed counries, Vat registered UK dealers or Overseas Dealers who supply their VAT number and therefore shouldn't pay VAT.
If we show A VAT Inc Price... it could confuse them and/or deter them.. as we suddenly look very expensive.
In an ideal world we could have both a ex and an inc price next to each other. When we re-did the site this year.. I did try it.. but it looked really cluttered.
As a compromise we put "plus VAT" next to every single price.. rather than say as a proviso at the bottom of the screen. I am trying to go to full on-line shopping cart by 2003 which will solve the problem entirely.
It's a very good point Mikey.. but as a lot more than 50% of our mail orer turnover goes to non VAT payers... It make sense to stick as we are... well at least for the time being
Cheers

Thats what it says Carl.. It's only the overseas dealers who provide a number and don't get VAT. The brit dealers pay it and claim back. They still are more interested in the Ex VAT price tho.

Sorry Trouser, it was obviously just semantics.
I thought you meant "Non-VAT countries, UK VAT registered dealers, overseas dealers, all of whom provide their VAT number and don't have to pay VAT" when in fact you meant "Non-VAT countries, UK VAT registered dealers, overseas dealers, the last of which provide their VAT number and don't have to pay VAT".
Even though I am VAT-registered (although I can't use it to buy car parts, unfortunately) I look at the VAT-inclusive price because that's what I have to write a cheque for. Sure, some of it comes off the VAT bill later, but that's not like "real money" to me

No worries mate
I must admit... i personally far prefer to see a VAT inc price when i buy anything not through the business... It is for sure much easier. Like I said.. without cluttering the site its impossible to keep both camps happy and this seems the best middle ground until I pull my finger out and sort the site properly

That's why I always try and make sure that I get a price inclusive of VAT and then also try and get a price for p&p and/or fitting (if I ain't doing it myself).
Is a bitch though when you think you've found something quite cheap only to find it ain't got VAT on

Just been chatting to hanslow on the dog.... he reckons we could do something where you roll your mouse over the ex VAT price and Java Script gives you the inc VAT price... that could work really well.. and keep everyone happy
Will speak to our web guy forthwith and try and do this... sounds ideal!!

Trouser, another idea is to get the website to recalculate, I don't know how, but US and Canadian ski resorts have the option "Display prices in ..." and you can choose USD, CAD, Euro, Pounds, etc. Have a look at http://www.skilouise.com/lift-tickets/daytickets.asp as an example.

Or have a cookie on the site, which remembers whether or not a user wants to show inc or plus vat. Make values printed via a javascript variable, and x1.175 for a inc vat cookie.

Of course, Pavlo, what you should actually do is use a constant for the value of VAT, and multiply the figures by that constant. Then you don't have to go and adjust everything when HMC&E puts the VAT rate up.

Does make it clearer to read that way. Would save customers having to roll over each price to get the VAT price, and you can also just print the price list off
