Importing from EU
#1
I called the VAT people today and they said I have to pay UK vat if I buy a new car in the EEC. Wny? Whats the point of having free borders if I have to pay VAT here. If I go to Europe and buy a £50000 diamond ring, I pay vat in the place I buy it and don't even have to tell anyone here i have done so. So why can't I pay vat in Europe and not pay it here?
Anyone a vat expert?

The general rule is you only pay the VAT once.
I'm importing from Holland at the moment and will pick up my car tax free for the dealer but will have to stump-up UK VAT @17.5% (payable to HMC&E within 1 month of importing it).
I think it may be different if you import from Germany where you may have to pay the German VAT and then reclaim it once you have proved you have paid the UK VAT.
Same difference really but you are obviously out of pocket doing it this way round.

If I remember correctly, for all goods purchased within EU member states, you pay VAT in the country of purchase - except for cars, boats and aeroplanes - for these you pay VAT in the country where the vehicle will ultimately be used.

Thanks for all the info. The Warranty issue is not clear. Holland only gives 1 YEAR warranty whereas Germany gives 3 YEARS so I guess it is better to buy from Germany.

Hi Gav,
Possible if can also pass on the details regarding the 2 yrs extended warranty, since I'll be picking up my car in November, at least I'll have something in my hand before I go over to Holland.
Thanks!!!

Just taken delivery from Belgium.......I now find that the Belgian Subaru THREE year warranty is valid in full by IM (including 6 year corrosion too!).
You need to send Subaru UK (thanks Gazzer!) a copy of the EU Invoice, UK Registration; find a local Subaru IM dealer and hey presto! UK 3yr Warranty car!! Sorted!!!

Gav Wright,
Yes, please do post details about this extended warrenty. I asked my Dutch dealer to look in to this but he says Subaru Netherlands don't offer an extended pan European warrenty. Did you phone Aalsmeer direct? If so, who did you speak to, as it seems that people get different responses (on all sorts of questions), depending on who you speak to...

Hi all,
I was just reading though this thread, I hear you all complain about importing form EU and paying 17.5% VAT in the UK.... try justifing this... In Ireland if I imported a car from the UK or any other EU country I would have the pay 46.6% VAT ie if I pay 28K for a car in the EU I would have to pay just under 14k VAT.
