Default Crank bearings scored ?

Evening all. So engine is out on 2016 sti , spoke to builder earlier and he mentioned may need a new crank as the bearings were starting to wear ?? He said the bores were remarkably smooth and pistons looked good ( is being sent off for machining and re bore anyway) car has done 45,000 miles , he said it normally points to run low on oil but to my knowledge it never has. I’ve owned it since new. Anyone any other ideas ?

It’s having new pistons, rods , arp studs and rcm gaskets ready for everything else to be added on. Nothing wrong with it I’ve just got bored or the stock power.

if your aiming for 400+ then a CDB conversion is a must IMO on a 2.5 block..........

Exactly there is a price to what we want unfortunately, so I’m going to stick around 420-440 and having spoke to a lot of people and tuners included they recommend the insert beyond 450 so I’m braving it. I’m sure builders wouldn’t build it if they knew it would go bang without !! Car isn’t tracked and always allowed to warm up and cool down

Compared to a 2.35, building a big power EJ25 is actually relatively cheap.

So besides machining for the block and head faces what is the extra cost for the cdb conversion inserts ? I’m guessing around 400-600 ?

It’s around that, yes, and worth the extra cost for the extra security it gives you. It’s worth thinking long and hard about your future goals for the car now. Many people think that a certain power figure will be enough and then get bored and regret not spending extra when the engine was out in the first place. For the “relatively” small cost of a deck plate and some decent head studs, you could have an engine capable of 500bhp so gives you headroom should you wish to turn up the wick a bit in the future.

hello mate how’s it going ? So the fmic is here. Engine is gone. Hence the thread. I’m going to ring him tomorrow and ask about weather the machine shop offers this insert or if it has to be sent elsewhere. I’m hoping it hasn’t been machined already as I’m presuming if it gets the cdb it will have to be done again. Not sure on what’s what until I speak to them tomorrow.

All good thanks mate, hope you are too. Do you know what machine shop they’ve sent it to? If they’ve machined it already all they would have done is deck the heads and block, it’s no biggie to get the deck plate put in too. They would have to deck the block again to ensure the insert is flush with the deck surface, but it’s not the end of the world.

Yeah they do take a while, my engine build took a year, but some of that was waiting for the ECU to come from Australia and some of it was having the machining work done, it took a while for the Iron Ductile sleeves to turn up.

Emtron, it’s a high end competition based ECU. There’s a few options but this one floated my boat and I’ve been impressed with it ever since. Very easy to use. Not cheap at £3.5k though.

std ECU can often be re-mapped and is fine at a certain level but for more features or more advanced mods then often its better to simply go aftermarket
