By running it you may make things worse.

By 'big ends' they mean the bearings or shells that go between the crank and the con rod. If these break up they could get into the oil and travel around the engine and do more damage and/or you could end up putting a conrod through the side of the block.

I would not drive it.

Starting could make the difference between a standard rebuild and possibly a new crank.

To a :
New engine block, new conrods, as well as the crank and bearing shells.

In otherwords - more expense to you.

Why on earth would you want to start an engine that you suspect is having a terminal failure?

Did have a Peugeot years ago where the big ends went quite suddenly in the outside lane of a motorway (I was driving quite normally at the time). Car was making some horrible noises but seemed to run fine. Limped it a few miles home and then to the nearest garage. Turned out to have a bent crank and con-rods; could have happened at the time of the failure or could be that the few miles with knackered bearings finished them off too. Had owned car 10 days, so got a full re-build on warranty as it happens

Do it why do a half arsed job of fecking the engine up, and film the moment the conrod pops out to say hello
