Default Northwest Crank repairer anyone?

I've just stripped my block down after a big end failure. It looks like the crank got off lightly!

Does anyone know a good outfit in the Northwest to sort out the crank and bearings for me.

I'm quite happy to assemble the block once fixed or am I better giving them the lot to sort out?

Also,

Since it's just the con rod bearings that seem to be ill, do you think I'll get away with just them or would I be absolutely made to not replace the main journals as well???

Gary

Personal opinion would be to replace crank and bearings, as when grinding a crank unless you can get all the bearings out of the oil way plugs in it you'll not be sure that you cleaned all the crap out after grinding, and it doesn't take much to kill a bearing if there's stuff still floating in the oil ways. TBH depending on where you do it it might not cost far off a new crank.

Thumbs up

Gary.

I am with Jim on this one, new crank is the way to go, re-grind also eats into the hardening process on the journals.

You may get away with a polish if the crank is in Spec.

as above, more cost effective in the long run to get a new crank and mains etc then engines apart so may as well do it once (especially if you use it as a track day gar as you username may suggest)

Replace, no brainer for the reason's said already..!

Isn't their a modified (improved/additional oil flow holes, iirc..?) replacement for the older type's of crank..? Again well worth it if you can £££ it..!

Thanks Guys.
I'm going to hope the crank is in spec.

if not, what sort of money is a reasonable price for a crank?

Around the £350+vat depending on model year. Give Lateral Performance a bell, but don't forget when you open up the engine you're going to need o-rings for in the block, headgaskets, full bearing kit, crank seals, and just incase some of the swarf from the bearings has travelled through the oil system, a new oil pump and modine oil cooler should be on the list.

Thanks Jim.

I realise about the gaskets and stuff and was concerned about the swarf but a new oil pump? Didn't think that.

Having said all of the above. I have fiitted another engine to the car and assuming it doesn't go bang before I fix this one, Could swap out the pump etc.

Unless you strip the pump down to its component parts flushing may not get all of it out, and for peace of mind least you know a new pump is going to do the business, plus the ideal time to uprate it.

Lancaster engines. Been in business for years, superb reputation. I believe TEG sport use them to do their machining work.

Lancaster Engines - UK block boring, re-sleeving & honing, con rod balancing, cylinder head skimming
