Can anyone tell me what this sound is?

Someone has said it is the bottom end but what exactly is causing this? It had a engine rebuild around 5 years ago. Previous owner said it was just piston slap but could it be something to do with the bottom end?

Cheers, Tom

Not sure if sounds like bottom end. Check exhaust manifold gaskets, if one leaks they sound awful. Had one go on me sounded so rough.

Another idea is check all your spark plugs mark sure there not loose. Had one Impreza that spat one out. Not sure how.

it’s sounding fairly normal to me , my forged engine is about the same , crank bearings going is quite a notice able tapping going up with revs , forged pistons often make a noise hot or cold noise reduces with revs , is it running ok and not loosing oil , exhaust is fairly obvious just sounds like blowing , if a plug is loose then it probably won’t seal again even when it’s tightened up properly , so better to change them , the plug issue happened to me and caused a running issue even with good condition plugs

Definitely not the spark plugs as sounded the same before and after replacing them.

I will check the exhaust manifold gasket, but not sure it's that.

It's been running fine.

I feel like because I have got used to the sound I wouldn't know if it is getting worse or something that needs sorting?

When one of my gaskets went sounded like engine had gone. Could not believe how bad it sounded only small leak.

Got lights come up on the dash now - engine management, cruise control and sport mode flashing.

Done the trick to find code (turn lights on, press trip button 4 times etc) and it has come up with P0140 which is 02 sensor.

So could be linked to the noise?

With mention of sport mode, I presume it's at least a Hatch
"Bank 1 Sensor 2" = Rear O2 sensor (22090AA850)
DTC P0140 pdf attached.
