This should help. Listen as the engine is revved. The file was provided by Alan Leslie.

WREXY,
My noise isn't even remotely like that sound I'd be really worried if my engine sounded like that Maybe I should record the noise and see if anyone can guess what I'm hearing. Thought it may be the thrust bearing on the gearbox at first.
Cheers Phill C

Could be your boost solenoid.
Open the bonnet and give the car a couple of hundred revs, if the noise is comming from the driver side strut then it could well be the boost solenoid. Mine does it, but I can't really hear it over the zaust.
Cheers.
Ian.

I get the same as you - intermittent knock at idle which comes and goes for no apparant reason. Have chosen to ignore it as its so infrequent.
Let me know if you work out what it is

I just love slappers mate
Noise isn't that bad and doesn't annoy me that much. If you rev it slightly then it disappears for a little bit!! A valve follower maybe ? Oil level is fine, and I don't think it's anything to do with oil pressure, but can't tell as my Defis aren't here yet
