i have a 98 turbo which i bought from new how do i know if the engine has the piston slap proplem.

 

If the car has piston slap then It sounds like a diesel when cold (until the pistons expand slightly and ermm fill the hole properly I presume?).

A while ago some one uploaded a sound file with what it sounds like. Have a look on search.

To put ur mind a rest u could drop it off at a RR, u'd have to leave it there for a while though, to let things cool down b4 testing. I'm sure they would beable to tell you. Unless piston slap is in its later stage's I'v been assured, it doen't do any major halm

I have just been to Listers in Worcester who said that piston slap occurs on cars into 1999. My car sounds rough on start-up and while cold. It could be confused with a tappety sound but tappets will quieten much more quickly.
I don't like the idea of a rattley piston in my engine! & i am thoroughly peeed off that subaru will not do the work.
Has anyone had the work carried out independently, if so how much?

 

Dogger, this is a know fault at Subaru, I'm very surprised they won't fix it for you. Have another word with them.

Are you speaking from experience? my car has fsh but not all subaru
maybe i should let them try to get a goodwill payment, others also seem to not get anywhere with subaru

 

Not had to claim my self, but I have seen posts where people have done so.

 

you'll be pleased to know that because my car is 15 mths out of warranty, deapite piston-slapping being a manufacturing fault, subaru customer relations told me to 'F' off.
What a nice lot Subaru are, has anyone had any good things to say about them?

if your neighbor's wake up when you start your car(and not from the exhaust note) that's when you know you have a piston slap issue.
