Default Boost only hitting 3 psi

Hi guys

Just wondering if anyone could help us out one of our mates has got a wrx blobeye that has a boosting problem it won't go over 3psi his local garage has had a good look through it taking inlet off, checking waste gate, boost leak etc to try and see if they can see any problems but have said it's fine they believe it's something electrical he's not getting any codes

Has anyone came across this problem before

Any information would be appreciated

That rules out what I was thinking lol. Forgotten what its called now, air intake maybe, the part that goes from the filter to the turbo. Have read they can go brittle and some collapse on boost.

Clogged boost control solenoid perhaps?....not sure if that would put up a light though. Easy to remove and clean inside with electrical cleaner. (not brake cleaner)
I keep mine clean by spraying electrical cleaner into the unit and blocking the holes...good shake and carried on until the brake cleaner was no longer coming out brown.

Bolted to the drivers side suspension turret. Worth a harmless go anyway. You could do the same with the MAF - again electrical cleaner not brake cleaner as it can leave a residue.

Pull out the two rubber hoses and spray in there. Don't put the hoses back round the wrong way!

There must be a boost leak somewhere I'm pretty sure wastegate pressure is 7 psi.

So with wastegate pressure set at 7psi, and only making 3psi boost, i think it must be something else than a boost leak. To get from 7psi to 3psi, is a _lot_ of escaping air if the turbo is working OK - you should definitely hear this, or it should be a big enough leak that it was obvious what was going on.

Is the car definitely making only 3 psi boost? I've had measurement errors before where I've accidentally disconnected a hose close to the boost gauge connection, where I thought the car didn't make vacuum (because of the local leak). What does the map sensor read vs the boost gauge?

Assuming the car is really making 3 psi boost, there aren't any electronics that will make it make only 3psi (at least that I'm aware of), which really points to a mechanical issue.

I know you said they checked the wastegate, but is the wastegate flap definitely closing fully? If it's not closed, it will definitely affect spool, and maybe even top end boost (but then, would it be enough to pull boost down all the way to 3psi, even if the wastegate flap was not closed? not sure about that...)

Is the car running standard cats still (i.e. up-pipe, downpipe etc)? Could be a collapsed cat / blocked exhaust.

How about the air filter as well? any blockages in the pipework leading into the turbo?

If none of the above, maybe time to take the turbo off and see what the wheels are like.
