Default How much does importing cost?

Hi Guys,

I fear this may have been asked a million times but I guess prices fluctuate...

I have seen a lot of purchases through the likes of Torque GT recently. If I was to go down the route of getting them to import say a Hawk Spec C (go for less than 50,000 miles) would that cost a lot? Significantly more than waiting for a common stock one or one on the marketplace?

Any insight would be useful

There's a fella north of Aberdeen that deals with imports - Aberdeenshire Imports. Look him up on FB and give him a shout. I asked him a few years ago about importing a Type R and I think it was about £4-5k on top of sale price in Japan. Likely to have changed a bit by now though i'd reckon.

Chris Dunnett. He’s imported a JDM Civic EP3 and a Forester for me in the last 5 years. I know he’s also imported some far more expensive stuff north of £35k, so you’d be in good hands.

Cheaper than the dealers south of the border and far easier to get to!

He works offshore, so I think he really enjoys doing the importing stuff in his spare time.

It’ll take 5 months from purchase at auction to pick up by the way, so you need to be sure what you want!

Unless there is a really particular model/spec/colour combination you want, I think you'd be better off waiting for one to be brought into the country by one of the usual importers first. Sure, you pay more but at least you get to check it all over and test drive it first. A Hawk Spec C is quite a popular car for UK importers.

To give you an idea, my hatch spec C cost around 13k at auction....by the time it was handed over it was 21500......and that was when the exchange rate was a hell of alot better . 20% vat, 14% import, shipping fees, iva fees, transport, importers fees etc etc

interesting. I used them to import my current car (Civic EP3 JDM) and didn't have any issues. Although oddly the car they got for me was bang on my budget.... not a penny less!

Nice one guys thanks for all the information. Didn't realise there was an importer up here in Aberdeen.

Seen a few spec c's on the market but I would probably be looking at a black one and haven't seen much coming through the importers recently

I do prefer jdm subaru models , in particular the fsti , but i feel it’s much less hassle and safer just to buy a freshly imported car , you can test drive it plus give it a good look and check over

Curious as to what went wrong? I used Torque GT to import a blob WRX wagon last year and was, for the most part, pleased with the service. The only regret I have is paying them to get the slightly scuffed bumpers painted - realised when I got home (car was wet on collection - now I know why) how poorly done it was. A bit of sanding/polishing should sort it but its a slight frustration on an otherwise very clean car.

Just a note for anyone doing this - make sure you get a carvx report done. Best £25 you’ll ever spend.

I've moaned about it many times on here; I was handed the car with no dipped beams whatsoever, which left me endangering my family and other road users that night. Then there was the crap undersealing, which I have only just discovered the consequences of this month, when I stripped the car. And the fog light white bulb, coloured in with a red pen. And the transporter damage to the roof that had been covered up by detailing. I could go on....

They (along with all importers probably) need to up their game on this one. There really is no point just spraying the bits you can see. Use an import in winter and it’ll be rotten within 5 years in the places you can’t. Honda, Mitsubishi, Subaru - doesn’t matter, they’re all the same.

Biggest problem at the moment is the weak currency rate
I went direct and used
Japaneseusedcars.com
Flat fee of around 900 which covered car report delivery to docks and all deregistration and radiation check
Then on top of that you have shipping and insurance if you want it ( but you want this for 100 or so ) Shipping depends if you want roll on roll off or container between 750-1500
Then import duties of 10% VAT 20% on top of all of that.
Then cost of MOT and registration . Less than 100
Carvx report is a must at 35 when you first see the car and get the chassis number . Mine was sourced from a dealer so had to pay a bit more than from auction

yeah, i'm just looking into this too...
talking with Mark at Brave..

don't like the idea of a 3rd party sorting it out and then they add their fee as well.

Neil - just like Ross, Chris @ Aberdeenshire Imports is who I used to import my R34 GTR and my Spec C RA. Highly recommended, constant communication and pleasure to deal with.......... Nearly bought an NSX through him as well but the Oil Crash put paid to that!!!

Might be a 2004 White Spec C RA for sale soon - what is your budget?

Might be a stupid question but is it still worth doing one if Torque GT are selling the car? I imagine they would have all this done before import?

Had 4 impreza's but all UK cars so a bit new to the import thing but got my eye on their white V4 type r.

Torque gt will probably dhow you the auction sheet if you ask

but personally for the £35 a carvx check will cost I would always do one to show the Japanese history

Do it.

For £26 it's a no brainer to see the history report from Japan and see where it's been.

I know someone who found out his car came from the radioactive area in Japan!!

Yes. Some niggle might be acceptable to them as a trader, but may not be acceptable to you as a customer.
