You can change it without taking the box out but its almost impossible to check all the surrounding/connecting bearings.

You may be lucky and you can swap it out for a new one and away you go.

If your c-diff has taken any other bearings with it then your new one wont last very long.

My centre diff went on my old 03 sti and it was rebuilt by scoobyclinic.

The centre diff was about £550
The rebuild was about £1000 plus parts £400 plus removal and fitting £500

The back part of the box will split to expose the centre diff so if your just going to swap the diff I would say 3-4 hrs maybe.

Ring Dan at scoobyclinic, he will talk you through some options and a way forward.
