Unhappy Viscous coupling

My gearbox (in a JDM WRX STi Version 5 wagon 1998) was whining it's little head offf & it's been tracked down to a knackered viscous coupling. New price = £360 + vat (ouch) but I have sourced a used one for approx £100. However, I've been told that if it doesn't happen to be exactly the same, it'll blow my gearbox up! Here's the info on the viscous coupling:

160mm tall, 117mm wide at bottow, 31 teeth in top drive, stamped with "VK232".

Also, gearbox is an 8 bolt bell housing (which I'm told is significant).

How do I make sure I get a compatible viscous coupling?!

Thanks in advance. :-)

Stotty, You'll need the viscous from a JDM Sti box, the others will be wrong. The 31 teeth is not significant although it is one half of the pair of JDM drop gears [ 31 x 31 ] Uk are {30 x 33 ]

If you were dealing with us we'd try to get hold of your viscous and compare, as it can be bit of a minefield. The wrong viscous simply won't fit. Time consuming but not ultimately worse than that.

The alarmist part refers to getting the drop gear wrong, if you put UK gears in a JDM box you will break the viscous.

If I can help more call me.
