Explanation you got sounds like b*ll*cks to me. The front diff in UK cars is open, so it won't wind up when turning. You may get a bit of fight in the centre diff, but even then it shouldn't make any noise; the only ones that do that are the electric DCCD diffs, when locked right up and you're taking a tight-ish corner.

As has been said, a knackered CV joint sounds like the likeliest suspect at this stage.

i wouldn't thought it would knock more like make the vehicle crab as it turns. itf it was wound up jacking a wheel would release it and it would turn ok for a bit until it wound up again admitidly it would do this quite quick. sounds more like a front driveshaft to me

I had this problem knocking from the front thought it may have been the drive shaft, so got some wrx shafts and changed them and bingo....

Yep if your Centre diff is making that sort of noise it is trying to get out of your transfer case. Highly unlikely

Actually its correct, the viscous drive transmits to the rear wheels, the centre diff across the fronts, I have the same problem on my STi5 and will need to be replaced asap, when cold no problem, when hot the car locks itself on slow speed turns and the fronts "jump" as they slip.

cheers

9 time out of ten worn centre diff would cause too much slippage causing a funny scraping sort of sound rather than knocking or clunking
