Default New owner: STi v4 - upgrade advice.

Hey all,

New to Subarus, picking up this v4 next Monday.

Speaking to Pete he reccommends a FMIC and an Alcatek ECU, I can't put requests in the Wanted section so if anyone has either of those please send a link.

As it's a 19 year old car, will I need a suspension refresh? Are the brakes good enough for more power?

Cheers

Hi mate welcome to the forum. Gets some pics of it up.

Had a quick look at the advert, you might want to have a look in the sale section. Also but not sure think you can put a top mount from a newage on. Not sure on the amount of modding needed.

The other thing is tyres get some on there

Thanks for the welcome.

I can't post pics as I haven't got the car yet!

Newage TMIC needs bulkhead 'manipulating' which I don't fancy.

FMIC just seems easier... And was recommended...

Do used ECU's come up?

What's the common classic upgrades? Lots of newage stuff bolt on?

Cheers

Get the car up in the air and check all the bushes/links etc.

Make sure the car is in fit health before spending money on a new ecu

Newage TMIC doesn't need bulkhead 'manipulation but does require a little bit of work to fit but that's for you to decide what to fit.

Drive her before you start modifying it's the best way to find out what you can improve/change imo (not knowing what you've driven before)

As for brakes speak to Ian @ Godspeed Brakes or Alyn @ AS Performance.
Best thing I did with the original brakes was to rebuild them with stainless steel pistons...however I did move upto Brembos.

I'm confident that the car is in good shape but good point, I'll see what's what and drive as-is for a bit.

Agree, enjoy the car for what it is,looks stunning by the way!
Then start on the upgrades
Brakes would be my 1st upgrade, then a remap which will transform the power delivery.
There is an alcateck for sale in the sales forum if you want to buy a bit cheaper than new,you will need it remapping for your car tho so add an extra 300-400£ and chose a decent tuner

The top mount as already been covered. A FMIC will requiring taking the front of the car off and depending on style/size will need the bumper chopping to fit. You will need a better/bigger turbo to get the benefits, which leads to bigger injectors.

The rabbit hole will just get deeper before you even consider a decent chassis/suspension set up, brakes and good tyres.
The horn not working is a worry as are budget tyres, VTA Chav valve
It could get very expensive just to chase numbers - for what reason?

I can't see anywhere which says number chasing is the way to go?
A v4 sti is a great car out of the box, this v4 has had a short block upgrade which should(I say should with a pinch of salt) handle more power then the standard block.

As said enjoy the car for what it is and then think about upgrades.
Imo I won't take a lot of ££ to get it to a crazy 400bhp classic road car

My STI V4 Type R is running a newage STI top mount with no bulkhead modifications. With the right bolt on bits you can see close to 400bhp. Mine is around 370 and pulls like a train.

A few. 550 injectors, fuel pump, MD321H turbo, Apexi ECU, newage STI top mount, manifold, exhaust and maybe some other bits too. Also, bigger brakes and a 6 speed box to cope with the extra ooommmphhh

First mod you should do is the headgasket

On a serious note, i would suggest you look for ESL ecu`s too. They just as good if not better than the alkatec in many areas + you get to keep oem diagnosis.

+1 Drive the car first. If you still crave more grunt then you *will* need bigger brakes and you *will* need a 6-speed.

High torque and mechanically unsympathetic will kill a 5 speed,at standard power a box can shat itself and plenty of people have run decent power on a 5 speed so I wouldn't say you *need* a 6 speed.

A 19 year-old TY752 with 85k miles is probably on borrowed time on standard power/torque, let alone a power/torque upgrade...

Or put it another way: if you're not driving quickly enough to warrant an upgrade on a TY752, you don't need any more power either.
