Which Scooby?
Hi gents,
I'm new to this forum, so I do apologise in advance if I post something which has been answered elsewhere.
I'm in the market for a second car, something to really enjoy on the winding roads of West/Mid/North Wales.
My daily driver is a new CLS350, so obviously a Scooby offers something completely different. I just want raw outright pace, handling and connectivity. I've just turned 27 so I'm aware insurance won't be amazing, but I'm not too fussed about this.
The models I've plucked so far are:
WR1 (loved these as a kid when they came out)
CS400 (love the Cosworth element)
T25 Hawkeye (if I'd be so lucky as to find one!)
I'm very keen on buying something which I can enjoy, yet retain value when it comes to move it on to something else down the line. I'd initially decided to buy a new Focus RS & take it to Mountune, but I think this is a better and slightly more fulfilling way to go.
I'd really appreciate your input, many thanks!
Adam

If you want raw and connected then you want a Classic which basically means a pre year 2000 car, my personal choice was the first of the STI Type R's which is a V3 2 door STI... there are other options / versions up to V6 all either 2 or 4 door but based on the same engine... give or take minor differences... which mostly relate to weight saving and styling.
Failing that the only other post 2000 cars I'd entertain are the S202 or a Spec C up to 2005... beyond that I'm personally not interested.
But each to their own.

Thanks chaps.
So back to the original cars I mentioned, am I right in saying from your experience these are also good choices?
Given that I a) like them as a specimen/their history b) their limited runs...
Really appreciate your response
Budget wise, I'm comfortable paying in the 20s for something top notch.

Wouldn't bother with any of those TBH.
WR1... crap colour puts 99% of enthusiasts off and theres not really anything special about it beyond it being the 1st uk car to have dccd and be mapped close to the true potential of the standard turbo.
CS 400 is a Cosworth exercise in how to cost you even more money for a built engine and fancy seats... they are nice seats though... but probably out of budget.
T25 is just someone with money that modded a few Subarus and stuck a few badges on them and sold them for a premium, nice work if you can get it.
If your looking for something special in the era of cars you're looking at it wants to have an 'S' in front of it, or be a spec C of some description or if it has to be a UK car then RB320's are nice.

^^^I would ask for the auction sheet for that car before committing money^^^
If you can afford to spend in the 20s then as mentioned above, the Type RA-R would be the obvious choice.
Also agree with Ditch. I wouldn't bother with the examples listed in the OP.
A decent RA-R is out of my budget so I'm looking for a Type RA to come up in the JDM auctions.
I'm in Haverfordwest if you want to chat some more.

All very helpful, thanks lads. I'm happy paying the necessary for the right car, obviously the more I pay the more unique I want it to be (factory not modded) so it will remain desirable for resale (I always think of this).
I do prefer the "blob" eye to the Hawkeye shape, that 04 plate Spec C RA above is lovely - wish it had the more traditional spoiler on the back! What's the performance on this model?

I've got a MY05 Blobeye Spec C Type RA and I'm not that far away from you if you wanted to have a look and take a drive of one.
Mine is not a daily so I can't really comment on commuting etc, they are louder than a standard STi but not unbearably louder.

As said above. the S models, and Spec C's are the pick of the bunch and also will retain their value.
These guys are selling my S204 on my behalf. The drive of these are immense. And the full carbon Recaro's make them a cut above the other cars IMHO.

I've been going there for the best part of 15yrs most years, it's one of those places that just grabs you... and there aren't many that have grabbed me quite like it... especially in the UK.

prices are on the up and up so should it retain if not go up in value (depending on the initial purchase price that is)

Or Better still a Type R ( the original) if you can drive a bit and like a slightly more entertaining ride, they are a bit tail happy though and can catch you out with the old lift off oversteer... takes a bit of getting used to if you've never had rear wheel drive... but they're lots of fun and almost 200kg lighter than the Newages (post 2000 cars)... took mine down there a couple of times as they're the sort of roads that it was made for... fantastic for overtaking too.
