I would say the type of tyres that are on a car and what type of suspension it's got on would be a clue and the sellers honesty, but it wouldn't deter me to buy as long as the car in question has been looked after track or on road if not looked after it will be goosed regardless

High performance cars are made to be driven hard and looked after even harder if on track this means atleast the owner is responsible using the cars power to its potential IMO

When I was on a Peugeot forum, one of the lads bought a 306 rallye. The seller lived near silverstone, the car was his daily drive and he went on the track most months. The car was maintained regardless of cost and service more often than recommended.
He bought it with 80k on the clock and standard bhp was 167bhp, it made 175bhp on the rolling road. Not bad for a 6 year old car that has been tracked!

The blob wrx that I have got now had been maintained regardless of cost. I bought it with 100k on the clock, it made 242bhp before I did anything not bad for a 225bhp car with 100k on the clock

If i was buying a track car id buy from a serious track enthuisaist that has changed oil, brakes etc after every event. Bit swings and roundabouts really. 50k miles car that has done few laps here and there or 80k miles advertised as never been tracked or dragged but has been thrashes up and down local bypass most sunday nights regardless.

A car that has been used predominantly on track wouldn't survive the experience had it not been looked after, it's a bit like the high milage argument in that a car with high miles wouldn't have high miles if it had not been looked after.

I for one would sooner have a car that's been used and looked after than one that has not been used and neglected, that said when I view a car I don't care about what it's done before I judge it on the day, but then a folder full of receipts to me equals a troublesome car, where as some look for that and think it's a good sign

Really depends what the receipts are for. Regular servicing and that kinda thing is fine, back and fourth for fault finding not so much.

To answer the OP - You can polish a turd, roll it in glitter but it is still a turd.

Unless the seller tells you....you can't, like asking if it's been used on the M25?

And I dont agree that a folder full of receipts = a troublesome car lol, depends what they are for...parts/servicing etc, I bought my car with a BIG folder of receipts but now I need to change my power steering belt so maybe it's true

Type the car into Google and look at the images. Always a good start. If it's been on a track, there's a chance photos might have been taken and put onto a forum somewhere at some point so they'll pop up on google images if you type the right info in!
