Default "Direct Replacement" K&N filter DOES NOT FIT

Anyone else had issues? It is impossible for the 3 tabs of the air box lid to hook over the air box CORRECTLY to ensure a proper seal. I've been trying for an hour and no luck. It just doesn't fit. It's ever-so-slightly too big around the edges. I have no issue refitting the standard filter properly.

Overall I'm extremely annoyed for what should have been a simple swap. Now I've got the hassle of sending it back etc. What other "like for like" upgrade filter is there? Green?

Yeah I had exactly the same problem with mine, as you say turned a 10 minute job into about a hour and half
I ended up trimming the edge off the filter and it fitted

Ridiclious. I bet the majority of people don't even realise there are tabs and fit it with the lid not properly secure. We shouldn't have to trim it when it's advertised as a direct replacement. I didn't order direct from KN but hopefully the seller will refund me.

This little thing? I pulled it off and assumed it's part of the manufacturing process.

I went with a genuine Group N STi filter, not cheap, but a quality part

I must have gone through at least 10 of these since i've owned my car, i swap them for a new one once a year and none of them have ever fitted correctly, it's like there's too much rubber on the surround of the filter, makes it hard to get the locating tabs on the air box back in.

Mine was more than just a tab, had to trim a fair bit of the rubber away at one end to be able to force it into the box enough to get the lid to lock down properly. Did seem poor for a direct replacement.

Can anyone else who has had any problems with their K&N filter fitment please reply on this thread. I've messaged K&N explaining the issue and I've also directed them to this thread.

I expect that a large majority of people who fit them do not ensure the tabs on the airbox lid are hooked over correctly so that the lid is properly secured and sealed so the issue has never been brought to their prioritised attention.

There used to be a thread on these tabs needing to be removed, iirc it started with the green filters,
Never had an issue with the tabs removed and I have fitted a few over the last decade.

Well this one is too big around the edges. Anyway, I've just ordered a genuine STI performance filter designed for group N rally from Import Car Parts. . £80 but at least I know it'll fit! Looks identical to the Cosworth filter which has good reviews."

Just send the filter back and get them to send you the correct one rather then spending more cash on a filter that will do the same job.

I will get a photo of mine and the amount I had to trim off to make it fit.

I had this on my blob wagon, but always managed to get the locating tabs in with a fiddle; However, a well known specialist left it all hanging loose after its service last year, so it is clearly a problem.

Bought the STI performance filter used for Group N rallies out of annoyance.... Ah well, will buy the Cosworth one next time around if/when I have to replace.

I've got a k and n and yes it's a nightmare trying to get the lid on!
Brute force.
Was looking at Cosworth.
Are they serviceable or throw away?

After this thread I actually took mine out and cleaned it yesterday,
no Idea why you guys are really struggling, all I did was use a socket extension bar to gently push the tab into place and then fit the lid, all it needs is the odd mm nothing more, if it went in too easy id guess it wouldnt seal properly,
I also have Samco hoses which make it a little harder then the standard squishy pipe that will push in to give you more room.

I literally spent 1 hour trying to manipulate it in all sorts of ways but it just wouldn't fit. Put gloves on and was really trying to force it too at different angles etc, took the pipes off to give me as much room as possible but no. Definitely not going on
