Default Cheeky sods at DVLA.

I bought a new car 26 Feb, SORN'd it 27 Feb, tax ran out 28th.

Just had a £80 fine through the post and need to also pay back tax.

Unlike them to be inefficient? I've got the confirmation to say I'd SORN'd it. Now I need to waste time writing a statement etc, pain really as I was putting it on the road 1 May. What the bets when I tax it from next week they won't let me.

Wait till you realise that buying / selling a second hand car means they actually get the tax paid for that month twice ... As they wont refund the seller for that month but the buyer has to pay tax immediately... How on earth are they allowed to get away with that !?

Oh and then you have pay 2 months upfront when you do tax it... Again, why!?

Its a joke seriously how do they get away with it. Most people who dont change cars regularly dont notice, but its really bad, they must be making a fortune!

So what if you buy another car within the last few days of a month? Are you still able to tax the car from the beginning of the next month like it used to be?

Legally speaking, no. But if you're going to buy another car within the last few days of the month, why not just wait a few days and buy it at the very beginning of the next month and tax it at the start of that new month?

I was chatting to a woman today who mentioned something similar, and she was asked to PROVE she had taxed it, and send in screen shots, emails, bank statements etc, all to prove to the DVLA system, that her vehicle was taxed.

I am sure if you had the money and the brains/right contacts, you could take them to court and bill them for time spent on doing this, and sue them for the hassle.
