Default So I pulled the trigger and purchased. A few questions.

Hi,

So I purchased a nice 07 Hawkeye 2.5 that looked to be in good condition. All the stamps etc. All the panels looked fine. It drove fine on and off boost. No garage paperwork however, just the V5 and service book

It is going in for a full service, new fluids, plugs, filter, tracking/wheel alignment etc.

Anyhow it has offside front wheel play on the ball joint on the MOT advisory. The garage are putting it through a new MOT and if it fails it will be rectified. However, even if it isn't fixed under MOT, it needs to be fixed, as I want it spot on. Approximately how much would it cost to fix it ?

Also, it has a mod and I don't like it. It has a HKS BOV. Now, as I understand it BOVs relieve the turbo pressure etc etc. However I also hear that BOVs mess with the ECU/Engine because stock maps expect a closed loop system and causes the engine to run rich..

I will probably take this off and just stick it on Ebay.

Thoughts?

Ball joints are around £30 for a genuine one. 1 hour to fit tops. It's a general wear and tear item as on all cars. As for the dump valve, it's up to you really. They don't add performance and can sometimes leak. Plus they can make the car run a bit 'jerky' on and off throttle in slow traffic. And yes, they will make the car run rich but only for a split second when you come off the throttle and metered air is released to the atmosphere rather than back into the inlet manifold.

If it's a real SSQV it should run fine and they don't leak due to the design. If its an ebay knock off (they look almost spot on) it will be crap and cause issues. Also you can get a kit to convert them to recirc which is basically a nozzle and hose to plumb it back in.

I'd be more worried about the 2.5 engine than the chavs trumpet.

If you haven't already bought it, id be tempted to walk away, the hawk 2.5 litre engine is not the most reliable of engines and needs to be looked after, No paperwork would really worry me, and also if the headgaskets have been changed already, I would want to know who did it, and what they did(paperwork would back this up).

Unless your buying it cheap, there are plenty of hawk STi's for sale with plenty of paperwork and history!!!

It wasn't cheap cheap but the price was ok. I do however plan to get the engine forged in the next month or two so hopefully that will be ok.

I'm getting a tad paranoid now

Oh and just to give you all a chuckle, Just sorting out my insurance. I obviously checked this out prior to even looking at the car. However I just checked out my insurance with my current provider....

£266..... a month!!! Compare that to the best comparison engine at £480 for the year, with STI spoiler and aftermarket stereo declared. I think I will be cancelling my policy with my current provider...
