Default Gearbox advice

I have a MY99 UK TURBO I am currently rebuilding the engine to a 2.1 stroker and with many other bits im going to be looking for around 500bhp.

But I cant decide what to do with the gearbox, do I buy uprated gears etc for my 5 speed box or do I convert to a 6 speed box?

Also if I convert to a 6 speed do I need to change diffs, shafts, props or any other bits.

Appreciate some advice.

Adam

If you convert to six you need all the parts to go with it. It's not cheap. But then again neither are uprated gear sets plus they don't include a rebuild of your box which will cost a lot and any scychros that may be on their way out... Either way it's expensive but essential.

Personally, I would get a PPG gear set for the 5 speed. It will make it bullet proof.

You won't need a rear diff and accompanying bits if you buy a uk 6 speed. You can do all that with bigger brakes at a later date if required.

I have just put a 6 speed gear box in my classic and yes you will need to change all running gear for the gear box to run.

ok thanks for the advice.

I will price up both but possibly will upgrade my box as we use a guy through work who is brilliant with gearbox builds and does a good rate.

Any suggestions on best place to get the parts for my box?

Also what is everyone's personal opinion on clutches? My cars going to be used more on the road than track not a daily but regular, so cant decided which clutch im thinking either helix or exedy?

Personally, I prefer the ratios and feel of the 5 speed over the 6 speed, so if I was in your position and you trust your builder, then go for the 5 speed. Spending £2k on 2nd hand transmission parts with 70k+ on them makes no sense to me at all. In fact I think it's a complete rip off but it just seems to be the accepted thing.

Not the ratio rubbish again.
Get the 6 speed and matching r180 rear diff and shafts etc.
All much stronger than weak 5 speed stuff.
The ratios are fine its just a story made up by 5 speed owners to justify inferior parts

Get a UK 6 speed, it will match up to your existing rear end to get you up and running. Once you have the time/funds then upgrade to the R180 rear end job done, the PPG 5 ratios are nice in comparison to the 6 speed but they are hit/miss over 450bhp, would I spend £3k and still not have complete peace of mind... hell no!!!

Surely you're not going to swap out the suprior 5 speed ratios for a set of ratios that see you up and down the box quicker than a pair of ****** knickers..

Just examining options as I'm going to DIY a 2.1 stroker capable of 500+ so not too much in the way of choices really, as much as I hate to admit it there' no other viable options other than a 6 speed, as even with PPG it's the 5 speed casing that has a weakness add to that 5th gear being standard, With that sort of end goal I'd be an idiot to spend £1k on a Hawk 5 speed.

Edit to add: Oh and p1ss off the pair of you.

Type R is staying where it is for a few years yet, which was always the plan, but part of the reason I bought a Blob was just about everything I do to it will be transferable.

The standard 5th in a PPG box is a big issue in my opinion. Here is my PPG box i took apart due to a smashed standard 5th.

Yeah heard of quite a few stripping 5th over the years, not good really when you consider how much it costs for the gear set, you'd think they'd make a 5th too.

Does anyone know what 5 speed box is in a b4 rsk? I used to run 360bhp through one which used to get the shìt kicked out of it.

Put an audi O1E gearbox and diff in it. Stronger than subaru 6 speed and with a lot more ratio choices

Yes, my post was half in jest. An anyway I haven't got drag start reliability up yet, I'm still breaking rear shafts on a launch, although it does hook up rather well for a split second!
Must be over 1000 road miles in my setup now though
